Renowned Assamese singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg passed away at 52 after a tragic scuba diving accident in Singapore, India Today reported.
According to local authorities, Singapore police rescued him from the sea and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was placed under intensive care. Despite doctors’ efforts, he could not be saved.
Garg was in Singapore to perform at the North East Festival later in the day.
Tributes poured in from across Assam, the Northeast, and beyond. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “I have no words to express my grief. This tragic incident is an irreplaceable loss for our people — we have lost an invaluable treasure.”
Over a career spanning more than three decades, Zubeen Garg carved a unique place in India’s music scene with his soulful voice and genre-defying versatility. He recorded thousands of songs in Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, and several other languages, delivering timeless hits such as Ya Ali and Dil Tu Hi Bataa.
Beyond playback singing, he excelled as a composer, lyricist, actor, and filmmaker, championing Assamese art and culture on national and international stages. Honoured with multiple awards, including the National Film Award and numerous state accolades, Garg’s contributions transcended music, making him one of the Northeast’s most enduring cultural ambassadors.
