The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing illegal madrassas in Uttar Pradesh has submitted its report to the Yogi Adityanath government and recommended closing 13,000 illegal madrassas.

According to LiveHindustan, most of these illegal madrassas are located near the Nepal border. Seven districts including Maharajganj, Shravasti and Bahraich have more than 500 of these madrassas each.

SIT has reported that these madrassas have not given an account of their income and expenditure and hence there is suspicion that these madrassas have been constructed by using terror funding.

While the Islamic authorities claimed that the madrassas have been constructed using donations, no account of donations received has been given either.

These madrassas were reportedly, not only receiving foreign funding, but also working on some anti-national activities. With this report, the UP government is expected to crackdown on these madrassas.

The SIT was formed in October 2023 for a high-level investigation into irregularities in unaccredited madrassas and scholarships for minority students in Uttar Pradesh.
