The Ministry of External Affairs announced on Thursday (4 January) that the legal team of the eight imprisoned former Indian Navy personnel has been granted 60 days to contest the verdict given by Qatar's court of appeal.

The Court of Appeal in Qatar had previously revised the death sentences of the Indian nationals last month, instead imposing varying lengths of prison terms.

This judgement followed an appeal filed by the families of the Indians against a prior decision from a different court, Economic Times reported. The Navy veterans were initially sentenced to death by Qatar's Court of First Instance on 26 October.

Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry, stated in a press briefing that an appeal against this decision can be lodged within 60 days at Qatar's highest court.
