AAP Leaders Struggle Taking Oath In Rajya Sabha: After Swati Maliwal Was Asked To Repeat, Sanjay Singh Not Allowed To Take Oath

AAP leader Sanjay Singh.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh was not allowed to take oath as Rajya Sabha MP after his re-election to the Upper House on Monday (5 February).

Citing that Singh's suspension from the Rajya Sabha is currently a matter with the Privileges Committee, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar did not allow the AAP leader to take the oath.

Singh was suspended on 24 July 2023 for not following the directions of the chair. He was then arrested in October in connection with the now-scrapped Delhi liquor excise policy.

He has been in jail since then and was granted permission to file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha election and then receive the membership certificate.

Similarly, Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court had allowed him to go to Rajya Sabha to take the oath while dismissing his interim bail plea for attending the ongoing Budget session of Parliament.

Singh is implicated as an associate in the Delhi liquor scam, along with his party colleague and Deputy CM of Delhi, Manish Sisodia both of whom are under judicial custody.

Another AAP leader and a new member of the Rajya Sabha, Delhi Commission For Women's Former Chairperson Swati Maliwal too faced difficulty while taking the oath.

She ended her oath with 'Inquilab Zindabad' which is against the parliamentary norms and hence was asked by VP Dhankhar to take the oath again.
