The cleaning of the Wazukhana area of the Gyanvapi Mosque has commenced under strict security measures.

The Supreme Court had earlier granted the approval to an application filed by Hindu women petitioners, seeking directions for the cleaning of the entire 'wazukhana' area of Gyanvapi complex, where the 'Shivling' was discovered.

The cleaning operation, which started on Saturday (20 January), witnessed heavy police deployment in the area, with workers undergoing identity checks before entering the premises.

The process is conducted under the supervision of the District Magistrate, with representatives from both sides present during the operation.

"Cleaning of Wazukhana was ordered by the court. Talks have been held with both parties in that regard. Its cleaning will start from 20 January," the DM said.

Earlier, discussions were held under the leadership of the District Magistrate, involving individuals from Hindu and Muslim communities in Varanasi, addressing the concerns.

It's important to note that the Gyanvapi mosque management committee had also expressed support for the cleaning of the water tank, sealed for nearly two years on the apex court's orders.
