Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates on Friday (29 March) discussed a wide range of issues from Artificial Intelligence to Digital Public Infrastructure and efforts to combat climate change in a free-wheeling chat at PM's residence.

Here are the key highlights of the conversation between PM Modi and Gates:

Bridging the Digital Divide

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bill Gates discussed the critical importance of spreading digital infrastructure to India's rural areas to prevent a digital divide.

“I decided I will not allow a digital divide in India and hence took the infrastructure to villages across the country,” the Prime Minister said when the former Microsoft CEO asked him about the technological advancements that he is excited about, during a conversation with the PM at his residence.

“When I used to hear about the digital divide in the world, I used to think that I would not allow anything like that to happen in my country," he added.

Empowering Women Through Technology

During the conversation, Modi highlighted the success of the 'Namo Drone Didi' scheme, which has enabled women, who previously lacked basic cycling skills, to become drone pilots.

"Digital public infrastructure is a major requirement in itself… Women are more open to adopting new technology in India… I have started the ‘Namo Drone Didi’ scheme. They say that they didn’t know to ride a bicycle but they are now pilots and can fly drones. The mindset has changed,” PM Modi said..

Reflections on the G20 Summit

PM Modi shared insights from the G20 Summit, noting extensive discussions that occurred prior to the event.

He expressed satisfaction with aligning the summit’s activities with its core objectives and mainstreaming them, reflecting a positive outlook on international cooperation.

"We had extensive discussions before the G20 Summit and as you might have seen, the Summit's proceedings took a lot of turns. I believe we have now aligned with G20's core purposes & objectives, bringing them to the mainstream. I hope your first-hand experience echoes this sentiment," he said.

Advancements in Artificial Intelligence

The dialogue also covered the role and potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in modern society.

PM Modi recounted how AI was effectively used for real-time translation at significant events like the G20 Summit and the Kashi Tamil Sangamam, showcasing India’s progressive strides in technology.

PM Modi said, "Historically, during the first and second industrial revolutions we lagged behind because we were a colony. Now, in the midst of a fourth industrial revolution, the digital element is at its core. I am confident that India will gain a lot in this. AI is very important. Sometimes, I jokingly say that in our country, we call our mother 'Aai'. Now I say that when a child is born, he says 'Aai' as well as AI as children have become so advanced".
