Amazon Removes 'Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad' Sweets After Centre's Notice

E-commerce giant Amazon has removed sweets being sold under the name 'Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad' on the platform after a notice from the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA).

"We have received a communication from the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) regarding misleading product claims by certain seller(s) and investigating them for violations. In the interim, we are taking appropriate action against such listings as per our policies," said an Amazon spokesperson, Moneycontrol reported.

The company also noted that Amazon.in is a third-party marketplace where sellers, not Amazon, list and sell products to customers per applicable Indian laws and Amazon’s policies.

The CCPA had issued the notice to Amazon in response to a complaint filed by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT.

The complaint alleged that Amazon is involved in deceptive trade practices related to the sale of sweets under the name 'Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad' on its platform.

Upon examining the complaint, the CCPA observed that various sweets and food products claiming to be “Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad” are available for sale on Amazon's e-commerce platform.

"Such practice falsely influences consumers to make purchase decisions they might not have otherwise taken, had the accurate attributes of the product been mentioned," said the CCPA.

The CCPA has invoked Rule 4(3) of the Consumer Protection (e-commerce) Rules, 2020, in which e-commerce entities are prohibited from adopting unfair trade practices.

As reported by NDTV, the specific products in question listed on Amazon's platform include 'Sri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad - Raghupati Ghee Ladoo, Ayodhya Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad, Khoya Khobi Ladoo, Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad - Desi Cow Milk Peda,' among others.

CCPA had sought response from Amazon within seven days from issuance of notice, failing which necessary action may be initiated against the e-commerce giant under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
