In anticipation of the general elections around the world, Meta Platforms Inc announced on Tuesday (6 February) its plans to expand the labeling of posts created using artificial intelligence (AI) tools across its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.

To achieve this, Meta is collaborating with other tech companies to establish common technical standards for identifying AI-generated posts.

This includes incorporating invisible watermarking and metadata into images at the time of creation, allowing Meta to detect and label AI-created content even if it originates from competing services.

Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, revealed that Meta aims to detect and label images generated using tools from various AI-focused companies, such as Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Adobe, Midjourney, and Shutterstock, in the coming months.

Initially, Meta's system will focus on detecting AI-generated images, but efforts to detect AI-generated audio and video content are also underway.

However, challenges remain, including the inability to detect images from companies that don't adhere to industry standards or have stripped markers.

While Meta claims that it does not fact-check original posts by politicians, it will label AI-generated content regardless of its source.

“If we determine that digitally created or altered image, video or audio content creates a particularly high risk of materially deceiving the public on a matter of importance, we may add a more prominent label if appropriate,” Clegg said.
