Another Indian Student's Death Marks Eleventh Such Incident In US This Year: All About It

In a recent development, a 25-year-old Indian student, Mohammad Abdul Arfath, who had been missing for a month in the United States, was discovered dead in Cleveland, Ohio.
Arfath, a native of Hyderabad, had ventured to the US in 2023 to pursue his studies at Cleveland University.
The news of Arfath's demise was confirmed by the Indian consulate in New York, which expressed deep sorrow upon learning about the incident.
The consulate assured that they were collaborating with local authorities in the US to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the young student's death.
“We are extending all possible assistance to the bereaved family to transport his mortal remains to India,” the consulate further said.
Mohammed Saleem, Arfath's father, recounted of receiving a call from an unidentified individual on 19 March, claiming that his son had been abducted by a drug trafficking gang and demanding a ransom of USD 1,200.
Despite attempts to establish contact with Arfath, the caller refused to allow communication.
The news of Arfath's death adds to a series of incidents involving Indian students in the US this year.
He marks the eleventh Indian to lose their life in 2024, with eight of them being students.
Among the recent casualties, Uma Satya Sai Gadde was reported deceased in Cleveland, Ohio, on 5 April, while Abhijeeth Paruchuru, another Indian student, passed away in Boston on 18 March.
The circumstances surrounding the deaths of several other students remain under investigation, with causes of death yet to be confirmed.
