Bengaluru Surpasses Delhi To Become Top Indian City With Highest Number Of Private Cars

In a notable shift, Bengaluru has overtaken Delhi in private car ownership, registering a total of 23.1 lakh vehicles as of 31 March 2023, according to the Delhi Statistical Handbook 2023, reported by Economic Times.
The data, as reported by TOI reveals that Bengaluru's private car count now exceeds that of the national capital, where Delhi reported a total of 79.5 lakh vehicles, including 20.7 lakh private cars.
The report also noted that Delhi has actively pursued measures to manage its vehicle population, with around 55 lakh cars deregistered and 1.4 lakh scrapped in the fiscal years 2021-22 and 2022-23.

Additionally, over 6.2 lakh vehicles acquired no-objection certificates for re-registration in other states.
These steps align with an earlier Supreme Court directive from 2018, banning diesel and petrol vehicles older than 10 and 15 years respectively.
Bengaluru, often hailed as India's Silicon Valley, has grappled with severe traffic congestion, further exacerbated by inadequate infrastructure and public transport.
In 2022, the city secured the second spot globally for traffic congestion in city centres, spending an average of 29 minutes and 10 seconds to cover a 10km distance during rush hours.
Last year's global ranking also placed Bengaluru as the second most congested city, with residents dedicating 260 hours, equivalent to 10 days, to driving, with 134 hours attributed to congestion-related delays.
