The government on Wednesday (28 July) informed that the work on the Chandrayaan-3, India's third moon mission, is in progress and that the lunar mission is likely to be launched in 2022.

In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Space Jitendra Singh said, "Chandrayaan-3 is likely to be launched during third quarter of 2022 assuming normal work flow henceforth".

The minister also informed that the realisation of Chandrayaan-3 is in progress.

"The realisation of Chandrayaan-3 involves various process including finalisation of configuration, subsystems realisation, integration, spacecraft level detailed testing and a number of special tests to evaluate the system performance on earth," the minister said.

He further said that the realisation progress of the project was hampered due to COVID-19 pandemic. However, all works that were possible in work from home mode were taken up even during lockdown periods, he said.

"Chandrayaan-3 realisation resumed after commencement of unlock period and is in matured stage of realisation," the minister said.

Chandrayaan-3 is planned as a follow up mission to Chandrayaan-2 with a propulsion Module, lander module and rover, the minister said in a written reply to another question.

He said that the propulsion module of the Chandrayaan-3 has been realised and final testing is in progress.

"The lander structure is realised and propulsion system integration is in progress," he said.

The special tests of the project are planned to be completed in mid-2021, the minister added.
