News Brief
Congress leader Ajay Maken.
In a significant development, the Congress party has alleged that its bank accounts, including those of its youth wing, have been frozen by the Income Tax Department.
The move, occurring just weeks before the announcement of dates for the general elections, has sparked allegations of political vendetta from the party's spokesperson, Ajay Maken.
"We got information yesterday that banks are not honouring the cheque we are issuing. On further investigation, we got to know that the Youth Congress bank accounts have been frozen. The accounts of the Congress party have also been seized," Maken said.
Describing the freezing of accounts as a "disturbing blow to the democratic process," Maken emphasised the timing of the action, suggesting a deliberate attempt to disrupt the party's election preparations.
The freeze reportedly follows a tax demand of Rs 210 crore raised by the Income Tax Department, a demand that the Congress has labelled as politically motivated.
