A controversy erupted at Pune University's Lalit Kala Kendra on 2 February, as members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) clashed with students over a play titled 'Ramleela.'

Staged by Lalit Kala Kendra, officially known as the Centre for Performing Arts, the play delved into the backstage banter of actors portraying various roles in Ramleela, a traditional enactment of Lord Rama's life.

However, ABVP, raised objections to what they claimed were objectionable dialogues and scenes.

Shiva Barole, ABVP's Pune University unit chief, cited instances where Sita Mata was depicted smoking and using abusive language towards Laxman.

"We took objection to such acts and stopped the play called Ramleela. It hurts Hindu sentiments. The students of Lalit Kala Kendra then tried to heckle us. We have approached the police and sought the registration of a case," stated Barole.

Meanwhile, the incharge at Chaturshrangi Police Station informed that there was verbal spat between the two member over the play.

“We have got the information that there was a verbal spat between two groups at the university campus, ” Chaturshrangi Police informed.

"We have summoned both groups to record their statements," the statement added.
