Convict Serving Life Term In Godhra Train Burning Case Nabbed In Gujarat, After He Jumped Parole
The Sabarmati Express bogie that was set on fire at Godhra in 2002.
Kasim Abdul Sattar, convicted and serving life term imprisonment in the Godhra train burning incident of 2002, had jumped parole but was arrested again in Gujarat's Dahod district on Sunday (23 July), according to the police.
Based on a tip-off about the whereabouts of Sattar in Limkheda, Dahod, the parole furlough squad apprehended him on Saturday (22 July).
He was then handed over to the City B division police for transportation to Sabarmati central jail in Ahmedabad, where he will serve the remainder of his sentence.
Sattar was given a life imprisonment sentence for his involvement in the Godhra case on 27 February, 2002.
This case involved setting fire to two coaches of the Sabarmati Express in Godhra, resulting in the death of over 59 Hindu passengers and triggering communal riots that claimed the lives of over 1,200 individuals.
The Gujarat high court had decided to commute the death sentence of 11 convicts to life imprisonment, while upholding life imprisonment for the remaining 20 individuals involved in the case.
