India saw a spike of 3,604 new coronavirus cases in 24 hours taking the total tally up to 70,756 the Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday (12 May). As many as 87 new fatalities were also reported in a day.

Of the total cases, 46,008 are active and 2,293 are fatalities so far while at least 22,455 people have recovered from the disease.

Meanwhile, two days after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered senior bureaucrats to camp in Agra for COVID-19 containment, the city on Tuesday reported dip in the coronavirus cases, bringing down the tally to 13, a health official said.

Health authorities said pool sampling was continuing at a faster pace now. Test reports of 15 jail inmates is being awaited after death of one inmate two days ago. The Agra Central jail management is busy upgrading and streamlining medicare and standards of hygiene in the premises.

With initiative for policy planning and execution of a comprehensive strategy transferred to a new power centre comprising six senior bureaucrats dispatched by Adityanath to Agra, the overall situation in the district may now see some improvement and direction, health activists and representatives of dozens of voluntary groups hope Tuesday morning.

Two months after Karnataka registered its first COVID-19 positive case, the state completed one lakh-test milestone on Friday (8 May), Medical Education Minister K. Sudhakar said on Saturday (8 May).

“Karnataka crossed the 1 lakh Covid tests milestone. Our fight against coronavirus will continue with more zeal,” said Sudhakar.

Cumulative Covid tests stood at 1,00,986 at the end of Friday, resulting in 789 positive cases till Saturday noon, indicating a positivity rate of 0.78 per cent, one of the lowest in India.

By Thursday, total tests stood at 97,429.

Total samples which tested negative for the virus till Friday were 92,237.

Other top testers included Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMC & RI), 12,527 tests, Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMC RI), 9,280, GIMS, Gulbarga, 7,004 and others.

Meanwhile, a four-month-old child among 11 more Covid-19 patients were reported in Chandigarh on Saturday, taking the total number of cases to 159, officials said.

All 11 new cases were reported from Bapu Dham colony in Sector 26, the epicentre of the virus. The densely populated colony has housing units mainly for economically weaker sections.

The total number of people confirmed positive for the coronavirus in India has increased to 59,662 while 1,981 deaths were reported across the country, as per the latest data updated at 8 am today (9 May) by the Health Ministry.

India has reported 3,320 Covid-19 positive cases in the past 24 hours.

Additionally, the total number of discharged/cured patients has risen to 17,846, while one patient has reportedly migrated to Singapore as per the latest data.

Two new deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the toll to 68, it said.

The total number of people confirmed positive for the coronavirus in India has increased to 56,342 while 1,886 deaths were reported across the country, as per the latest data updated at 8 am today (8 May) by the Health Ministry.

According to the Health Ministry data, the confirmed cases of Covid-19 include 56,231 Indians and 111 foreign nationals.

India has reported 3,390 Covid-19 positive cases in the past 24 hours.

Additionally, the total number of discharged/cured patients has risen to 16,539, while one patient has reportedly migrated to Singapore as per the latest data.

Meanwhile, after a few days break, ten more coronavirus positive cases were reported in Assam during the past 48 hours taking the total number of positive cases in the state to 54, though only 19 of them are active, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday (7 May).

Five of the new cases are from Cachar district of southern Assam, bordering Tripura and Mizoram, while four people tested positive for in Guwahati. One more fresh case was recorded last night when a PG student at Guwahti Medical College tested COVID positive.

Sarma said that all the five persons in Cachar took a bus from Rajasthan in which a large number of other people travelled too.

The total number of people confirmed positive for the coronavirus in India has increased to 52,952 while 1,783 deaths were reported across the country, as per the latest data updated at 8 am today (7 May) by the Health Ministry.

According to the Health Ministry data, the confirmed cases of Covid-19 include 52,841 Indians and 111 foreign nationals.

Additionally, the total number of discharged/cured patients has risen to 15,266, while one patient has reportedly migrated to Singapore as per the latest data.

The total number of active cases across the country stands at 35,902.

With record 428 new coronavirus cases reported in a day, the total positive cases reported so far in Delhi reached 5,532 on Wednesday (6 May), the Health Department said.

A total of 74 patients recovered on Wednesday, according to the Delhi health bulletin.

"A total of 1,542 patients have recovered so far in Delhi while 3,925 cases are active," the Health Department said.

So far, 71,934 tests have been conducted in Delhi.

On 3 May, 427 new cases were reported in a day.

Nineteen new COVID-19 positive cases have emerged, including 13 from Badami in Bagalkote alone in the past 19 hours, raising Karnataka's tally to 692, an official said on Wednesday (6 May).

"Till date, 692 Covid positive cases have been confirmed. This includes 29 deaths and 345 discharges," said a health official.

After two days of Covid-19 cases spike in Davangere, Badami has emerged as the new point with 13 cases.

All the 13 Badami cases were contacts of positive case 607, a 23-year-old woman from the same place who was admitted in a Dharwad hospital and was also being investigated for Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI).

On adding the new cases, Bagalkote is currently battling 47 patients, breaching Davangere's 44 cases but has recorded only one death hitherto.

Badami is 451 km northwest of Bengaluru.

In a statement, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said that since the past nearly three months, the state government has been waging a war against the virus and managed to keep it under control.

"With the increasing number of Covid-19 tests, the number of positive patients has increased, and even the number of patients getting fully cured is on the rise," Thackeray said.

However, as part of the planned strategy, the government needs to ensure maximum number of ICU beds for Covid-19 patients for which he has personally approached the Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Railway, ports and other Central organisations based in the state.

Thackeray said that after the current lockdown is eased and people start returning to Maharashtra from other parts of India and even abroad in large numbers, there could be an increase in the number of patients for which additional ICU beds would be necessary.

Accordingly, he appealed to all the Defence and other Central organisations to make available large premises or buildings to serve as isolation and treatment facilities to handle the expected spurt in Covid-19 patients.

According to the Health Ministry data, the confirmed cases of Covid-19 include 49,280 Indians and 111 foreign nationals.

Meanwhile, the Yogi Adityanath government has issued guidelines for operation of roadways buses in green zone districts of Uttar Pradesh from Wednesday.

Raj Shekhar, Managing Director of UP State Roadways Transport Corporation (UPSRTC), said, "Buses will run in all routes of green zone districts. Buses would also run between two districts in a green zone. Buses will be available from green zone districts to the border districts which are in green zone."

"Without a face mask, boarding will not be allowed in buses and passengers will have to sanitise their hands before they board the bus. The number of passengers in every bus would be regulated as per the guidelines of the Central government," he said.

Shekhar further said that every bus will have a 500 ml hand sanitizer bottle and the driver and conductor will also cover their faces and conductors will be required to wear gloves.

The route of buses would be changed accordingly if there is a change in the zone category of a district.

All buses will be sanitized twice a day, before and after every trip.

Every depot would have a COVID -19 task force in place.

The running of buses from Wednesday is a part of the state government's efforts to gradually ease lockdown rules and allow restricted movement in green zones.

Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday (5 May) reported 67 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the state's total virus count to 1,717, a health official said.

According to the state nodal officer, of the 8,263 samples tested during the 24-hours ending Tuesday morning, 67 positive cases were detected. However, 14 of the cases have been identified as samples of persons who returned from Gujarat.

Meanwhile, Kurnool district continues to lead as the state's COVID-19 hotspot, with 25 cases reported for the second consecutive day on Tuesday. With this, the district's overall tally has crossed the 500-mark, and stands at 516.

On Tuesday, Guntur district reported 12 cases, Krishna district reported 8 cases, Anantapur, Kadapa, and Visakhapatnam districts reported 2 cases each, while one case was detected in Nellore district. 14 of the cases were identified as samples belonging to people from Gujarat. About 880 stranded fishermen belonging to AP had recently been brought back from Gujarat on Sunday (3 May).

Over the last 24 hours, 65 persons were cured and discharged from hospital, while one person was reported dead, taking the death toll in the state to 34.

Meanwhile, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel have donated their one-day salary worth Rs 16.23 crore to the PM-CARES Fund as their financial contribution towards the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

CISF Director General Rajesh Ranjan handed over a cheque of Rs 162,382,357 to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in New Delhi on Monday (4 May).

Dharavi alone recorded 42 new cases, taking the total in Asia''s biggest slum to 632 cases and 20 deaths.

Pune recorded 7 fresh fatalities, Akola 5, and Thane, Aurangabad, Solapur and Nanded, one each.

The dead comprised 22 men and 13 women, and nearly 70 per cent of them suffered from other serious ailments such as diabetes, hypertension, heart problems, and asthma.

With 2,644 new cases and 83 fatalities in the past 24 hours, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country climbed to 39,980 on Sunday morning (3 May), the Union Health Ministry said.

Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state with the total number of cases rising to 12296 with 521 deaths, though 2000 people have also recovered from the deadly virus.

In a significant milestone in its fight against the novel Coronavirus, India has completed over 1 million Covid-19 RT-PCR tests (Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction).

According to health ministry officials, India will be conducting 100,000 tests a day beginning next week. This signifies a quantum leap in the testing capacity as India was barely conducting 5000 tests a day in April 1.

In a serious development, the number of COVID-19 positive personnel in New Delhi based 31st battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has surged to a whopping figure of 122, reports Economic Times.

The personnel of the battalion have been admitted in an isolation facility of the Delhi government at Mandoli area.

Gurugram has reported six more positive cases of COVID-19, taking the total count of such cases in the city to 63, a health official said on Saturday (2 May).

According to the health authorities, all six of them have contracted the infection, after they came in contact with relatives, friends and colleagues.

Three cases were reported in Dundehera village near Kapashera on Friday (1 May). Two persons associated with finance company came in contact with the virus-infected Delhi residents and another person, who was tested positive for the disease is an employee of Delhi health department. So far, 38 people have been discharged in the city.

Meanwhile, migrant workers housed in a relief camp in a Chennai suburb held a protest on Saturday demanding they be sent back home.

With the news of one train taking migrant workers from Telangana to Jharkhand, a large number of migrant workers in Pallavaram camp protested in that locality demanding train for them to their home state.

The police later pacified the protesters.

"The number of Covid-19 positive cases found so far in Assam now stands at 42 with one death and 29 recovered from the disease and discharged from the hospital. Currently, the state's active cases are 12, who are undergoing treatments in various medical colleges and hospitals," he said.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Odisha rose to 122 as three more districts reported new cases on Wednesday (29 April).

Three persons have tested COVID-19 positive in Jharsuguda, Keonjhar and Deogarh districts, said the Information and Public Relations department.

The three persons have been identified as a 60-year-old man of Panchapalli in Keonjhar, a 34-year-old man of Basudevpur in Deogarh and an 18-year-old girl of Brajrajnagar in Jharsuguda, said the department.

Meanwhile, for the first time in three days, Andhra Pradesh reported a slight decline in the number of COVID-19 cases detected in a single day. On Wednesday morning, the state nodal officer reported 72 new cases detected during the testing conducted in the 24 hours ending 10 am. With this the cumulative tally of coronavirus cases in the state has reached 1,332.

The highest number of cases were reported from Guntur district with 29 samples testing positive, while Krishna and Kurnool districts reported 13, and 11 cases respectively. Anantapur, Kadapa, and Prakasam districts reported four cases each while Chittor and West Godavari districts reported three and two cases respectively. One case each was reported from East Godavari, Srikakulam, and Visakhapatnam districts respectively.

Meanwhile, Indore registered a big rise of 94 corona positive cases in the late evening bulletin on Tuesday (28 April) as the number of infected people increased to 2,471 in Madhya Pradesh.

The death toll from COVID-19 increased to 122 on Tuesday. Nine persons have died due to coronavirus infection in the state during the last 24 hours. These include three in Ujjain, two in Indore and one each in Bhopal, Raisen, Dewas and Ashoknagar.

Jabalpur which had recovered to get into the green zone with fewer cases was back in the Red zone. That could mean an extension of lockdown beyond May 3.

Four districts of the state, Burhanpur, Ashoknagar, Shahdol and Rewa recorded their first cases spreading the virus to 31 of 52 districts in the state on Tuesday.

Bhopal reported 30 new cases followed by 12 in Raisen, four each in Dhar and Ujjain, two each in Shahdol and Rewa, one each in Burhanpur, Ashoknagar, Jabalpur and Hoshangabad.

Indore with 1,466 cases remains the worst affected in the state.Bhopal is a distant second with 458, while Ujjain is at 123, Khargone 61,Jabalpur70, Raisen 45, Dhar 40, Hoshangabad 34, Khandwa 23,Agar Malwa, 24 Dewas 11.

Andhra Pradesh reported a record 82 coronavirus positive cases on Tuesday (28 April) morning, taking the state's tally to 1,259.

Since 258 persons have been cured and discharged, the active cases are 970. The state's death toll is 31.

The state nodal officer reported that 82 of the 5,783 samples tested during the 24 hours ending 10 am on Tuesday were positive.

The previous single-day high of 81 cases was reported on Sunday and Thursday.

As per a media bulletin released on Tuesday, Kurnool district accounted for 40 new cases, Guntur district 17 cases, and Krishna district 13 cases. Kadapa and Nellore districts reported 7 and 3 cases respectively, while Anantapur and Chittoor districts reported one case each.

District-wise, Kurnool tops with total 332 cases, followed by Guntur with 254, and Krishna with 223 cases.

No new cases were reported from 6 districts, including Vizianagaram which remains unaffected till date.

"The swab sample of the lone Mizoram patient had tested negative a few days back. After his samples were found negative in subsequent tests, the doctors would decide about his release from the hospital," Mizoram's Health and Family Welfare Director H. Lalchungnunga told IANS over phone.

"The patient's condition is stable," he said.

The 50-year-old Christian pastor from Mizoram had tested positive for coronavirus after he returned to Aizawl from Amsterdam, Netharland via Delhi and Guwahati on March 16 and then admitted to the Zoram Medical College and Hospital.

The Mizoram man's wife and two children's swab samples had earlier tested negative and they are staying at home.

Five of the eight northeastern states - Sikkim, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Tripura -- are currently free from coronavirus and its spread has been mostly tamed in other three states -- Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh readied itself for a longer haul under lockdown beyond 3 May as 75 more people tested positive in the last 24 hours, 31 of them in Indore. The state's coronavirus tally touched 2,168 on Monday (27 April).

Indore recorded 31 new cases, followed by Bhopal and Ujjain at 13 each, Jabalpur at 10, Five at Raisen and one each at Hoshangabad and Dewas.

A new district Harda reported the first case on Monday taking the spread to 27 districts out of 51. Indore has the highest tally of COVID-19 cases at 1,207 followed by Bhopal (428) and Ujjain (119).

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who took part in the prime minister's video conference with leaders of nine states, directed the officials to prepare proposals for corona treatment, preparations for conducting economic activities as per the Centre's instructions after 3 May.

Andhra Pradesh's COVID-19 tally crossed the 1000-mark on Saturday (25 April) morning. With 61 new cases detected during the course of testing done between 10 am on Friday (24 April) and 10 am on Saturday, the number of coronavirus cases in the state touched 1016, while the death toll reached 31. Srikakulam which did not have a single case till date, has reported 3 cases.

The latest surge in the state is from Krishan district with 25 cases, followed by Kurnool with 14 new cases. Anantapur district reported 5 cases, Kadapa and Nellore districts reported 4 cases each, while East Godavari, Guntur and Srikakulam districts reported 3 cases each.

This is the first time that COVID-19 cases have been detected in Srikakulam district which along with Vizianagaram district had not reported a single case till date.

The state nodal officer informed that of the 6928 samples tested during this period, 61 tested positive. With the testing stepped up over the past three days, Andhra Pradesh has been reporting a relatively higher number of COVID-19 positive cases.

On Thursday (23 April), the state had conducted 6306 tests, of which, 62 cases tested positive. Similarly, on Wednesday, 6520 tests were conducted and 81 cases were reported from the state.

Meanwhile, Following the Ministry of Home Affairs's (MHA) notification issued on Friday night, to allow the opening of shops, the Gujarat government on Saturday (25 April) declared that all the individual shops, neighbourhood shops and other small commercial activities outside containment zones will be permitted from Sunday (26 April).

Shops like stationery, provision stores, mobile recharging, mobile repairs, electrical goods, appliances repair, motor mechanic, etc will be allowed.

In order to normalise lives of the citizens after a month's lockdown, the Gujarat government on Saturday announced that all standalone shops, individual shops, small shops in rural areas, as well as urban areas, outside the cluster containment zones, will be allowed to open and operate from Sunday.

"Gujarat Chief Minister, Vijay Rupani has taken this decision so as to normalise the regular lives of the citizens which had been affected due to the month long lockdown. So from tomorrow all individual shops, small shops, neighborhood shops will be allowed to open, provided they follow the guidelines regarding covid-19 pandemic," said Ashwini Kumar, the secretary to the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) on Saturday.

Also, among the total cases, 1,464 patients are less than 50 years of age, while 359 were between 50-59 years and 425 patients are above the age of 60 years, the Health Report said.

Among the total 48 deaths, over half (25) were of those aged 60 years or above. The age category of those below 50 years has reported 10 deaths so far while those between 50 and 59 years have reported 13 deaths.

A four-month-old baby is among seven new Covid positive cases in Karnataka, raising the state's tally to 425, said an official on Wednesday (22 April).

"Till date, 425 coronavirus positive cases have been confirmed. This includes 17 deaths and 129 discharges," said a health official.

No Covid patient discharges occurred in the past 19 hours.

The seven new cases emerged from Kalaburagi (5) and Bengaluru Urban (2).

The new cases surfaced from the city after a gap of three days.

Of the new cases, five are contacts of earlier cases and two suffer from Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) medical condition as well.

Meanwhile, the Chhattisgarh government has decided to extend the closure of hotels, restaurants and liquor shops till 28 April to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Earlier, these services were set to restart on 21 April.

An official said that all liquor shops including countrymade and foreign liquor, and warehouses of the Chhattisgarh State Beverages Corporation located in Raipur and Bilaspur will be closed till 28 April. Also, liquor shops in all districts will remain shut till the above date.

Besides, all restaurants-hotel bars and clubs in the state have been ordered to remain closed till April 28. Earlier, orders for closure were issued till 21 April.

This order has been issued by the Commercial Tax (Excise) Department. The state government has instructed all District Collectors to strictly follow the orders.

The total number of people confirmed positive for the coronavirus in India has increased to 19,984 while 640 deaths were reported across the country, as per the latest data updated at 8 am today (22 April) by the Health Ministry.

According to the Health Ministry data, the confirmed cases of Covid-19 include 19,907 Indians and 77 foreign nationals.

Additionally, the total number of discharged/cured patients has risen to 3,869, while one patient has reportedly migrated to Singapore as per the latest data.

The total number of active cases across the country stands at 15,474.

Meanwhile, with the help of Civil Defene Corps (CDC), the Karnataka government distributed 15 lakh food packets to thousands of migrant labourers, stranded across the state due to sudden lockdown since 25 March, an official said on Tuesday (21 April).

When the 21-day lockdown began on 25 March, the CDC swung into action and reached out to the migrant labourers, who were without work, food and shelter, as the lockdown suspended every activity and they could not go back to their native places in the absence of trains and buses across the country.

"As our mission is to protect life and property of the people in the hour of crisis or in the event of natural calamity or external aggression, about 2,500 corps volunteered to take care of the migrant labourers in make-shift shelters, providing them with basic amenities and food packets," CDC Commanding Officer P.R.S Chetan said in a statement here.

The CDC also distributed 1.3 lakh grocery kits to the needy through the state government and Akshaya Patra from 4-20 April.

Rajasthan government has decided to stop the use of rapid test kits from China as they were showing only 5.4 per cent accuracy in testing Covid-19 cases, according to Health Minister Raghu Sharma.

The kits, used on Covid-19 positive patients, showed them negative too, Sharma added.

The state government has written to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). "We are awaiting the ICMR's feedback. If it asks us to stop testing, we will send these kits back," he said.

Sharma said the Health Department had set up a committee to test these kits' accuracy. It should have been 90 per cent, but, according to the committee, the accuracy was only 5.4 per cent.

"We followed all the ICMR guidelines during testing. But doctors advised that there is no benefit using these kits. Hence, investigation has been stopped with rapid testing kit," he said.

At present, testing is being done by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) kits. The department had ordered purchase of more PCR kits, he added.

According to the official, a woman who had tested positive for the coronavirus, died at 10.45 am on Tuesday at Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) Ranchi. Her husband had died on 12 April.

She was a resident of Hindpiri locality of Ranchi which has emerged as the hub of the infection in the state. In Hindpiri, more than 22 coronavirus positive cases have been reported.

According to doctors, the woman had lost her mental balance after the death of her husband. She died owing to complications caused by comorbidities.

Meanwhile, the total number of active coronavirus cases in West Bengal rose to 245 with a record number of 54 cases reported on Monday, a top official said.

The death count, however, remained at 12, Chief Secretary Rajiva Sinha said.

The figure of 54 is the highest number of fresh Covid-19 cases reported in the state on a single day.

According to Sinha, 415 tests were conducted in the state over the past 24 hours, with 54 testing positive. The cumulative figure of tests in the state has risen to 5,469.

A total of 73 people have recovered fully so far.

According to the Central government, the cumulative number of Covid 19 cases since the outbreak of the disease in the state is 339.

The Health Ministry on Monday (20 April) warned that 80 per cent of all coronavirus patients are asymptomatic or show mild symptoms.

Fifty three journalists reporting from the ground in Mumbai have tested positive for Coronavirus. They have now been isolated.

"Out of the 171 media persons, 53 tested positive for coronavirus," BMC spokesperson Vijay Khabale has been quoted as saying.

Telangana Government has decided to extend the duration of lockdown imposed to contain the COVID-19 spread in the State till 7 May.

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), India’s apex drug regulator body, has approved the proposal of Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) for conducting clinical trial of convalescent plasma in Covid-19 patients, as per the protocol developed by the ICMR, reports Economic Times.

The Drug Controller General of India in a notice issued on Friday (17 April) said that its subject expert committee (SEC) reviewed the ICMR’s proposal and based on its regulation, the CDSCO has conveyed no objection for conduct of clinical trial.

In convalescent plasma therapy, the treatment of severely infected patients will be done using antibodies from the blood of patients who have recovered from Covid-19.

Meanwhile, Karnataka registered 12 new Covid positive cases in the past 19 hours, comprising a teenage boy among 11 male patients, raising the state's tally to 371, an official said on Saturday (18 April). Discharges rose by four in the past 19 hours from 88 to 92.

"Till date, 371 corona positive cases have been confirmed. This includes 13 deaths and 92 discharges," said a health official. Among the 12 new Covid patients, 11 are male and one female -- including a 16-year-old boy.

Among the new cases, Mysuru accounted for three, Bagalkot and Kalaburagi two each and Gadag, Vijayapura, Belagavi, Mandya and Dharwad one each.

Two secondary contacts of an earlier case, Mysuru pharmaceutical company employee, have tested positive in the past 19 hours.

All the new cases are isolated in designated hospitals across the state.

The administration has also sealed Gali numbers 26, 26B, 27 and 27B, Tughlakabad Extension in the South-East district.

In the North district, another containment zone is formed in K-Block Jahangir Puri between houses 716 and 785; 786 to 860 and 861 to 950.

In the South district, area around house number 859/20, L-II, Sangam Vihar has been sealed.

Meanwhile, Telangana is waiting for the nod from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to go ahead with its proposal to treat Covid-19 patients with convalescent plasma therapy.

He said under this therapy blood is collected from patients who have recovered from Covid-19, plasma is separated from it and then administered to patients. "This therapy is not yet allowed in the country. We have sought permission from ICMR," he said.

Rajender said that the ICMR could recommend the convalescent plasma therapy based on its research on the advantages and disadvantages, accuracy and other aspects of this treatment.

A seven-member team of doctors is said to be coordinating with the ethical committee of ICMR in this regard.

Meanwhile, after extending the nationwide lockdown, the Union government on Wednesday released a list of 170 hotspot districts, which includes all six metros and various other large cities. The list includes all nine districts of national capital.

Among the list of hotspot districts with large outbreaks are the nine districts of Delhi – South, South West, Shahdara, South East, West, North, Central, East and New Delhi.

According to the government a hotspot which will be called a red zone would be a district or city that contributes to more than 80 per cent of the cases in the country or the state. Apart from these places that show a high rate of infection, that is doubling rate less than 4 days – will also be in this category.

There are 207 other districts marked as potential hotspots and the government has now tasked the states to ensure containment of outbreak in these regions. The only way that a district or region can be brought out of the red zone is when there is no new case of Covid-19 for at least 28 continuous days, once this is achieved the district would be called green zone, that is Covid-19 free area.

As many as 19 more coronavirus cases were reported in Andhra Pradesh, taking its total such cases on Wednesday (15 April) morning to 502.

The state nodal officer for CoVID-19 said that more cases were detected after tests conducted between 5 pm on Tuesday and 9 am on Wednesday.

Eight new cases came to light in West Godavari district, six in Kurnool, four in Guntur district, and one in Krishna district.

The active cases in the southern state total 475, with 16 persons cured and discharged so far. The death toll is 11, including three in Krishna district, two in Anantapur, two in Guntur and one each in Kurnool and Nellore districts.

Guntur district has the highest 118 positive cases in the state, followed by Kurnool with 97, and Nellore with 67 cases.

Meanwhile, a team of health workers and police was attacked in Moradabad on Wednesday when they went to pick up a coronavirus patient and his family.

The incident in which several police and health workers were injured took place in Nawabpura area of Moradabad. The ambulance and four other vehicles were also damaged in the stone pelting.

His samples were sent for testing on April 9 and the report that came on April 13 found him to be corona positive. Sartaj died the same night.

Some members of his family were quarantined at the IFTM University.

The health and police team, on Wednesday, went to their house to pick up Sartaj's younger brother who had been suffering from fever.

As soon as the team reached the area, people started coming out of their houses and collecting at the spot. They tried to prevent the remaining family members from being taken for quarantine.

The health team tried to explain to the crowds but the local people became aggressive and started pelting stones. ADG (Law and order) P V Ramasastry said in Lucknow that the situation was under control and efforts were on to identify the miscreants. "We will take very strict action against those involved in this incident," he said.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh marked the end of the first phase of corona lockdown with high of 126 positive cases on Tuesday (14 April). This took the total number in the state to 741, health officials said.

Indore reported two while one person succumbed to virus in Bhopal.

With 83 news corona positive cases recorded by Tuesday evening Indore touched 411 mark, said the health department officials. Bhopal''s tally touched 158 with 16 new cases.

Of the 53 COVID-19 deaths in the state, 37 have been reported from Indore. Five people have died in Bhopal, six in Ujjain, three in Khargone while one each in Chhindwara and Dewas.

Apart from Indore and Bhopa, Ujjain recorded 26 cases while Khargone and Barwani recorded 17 each. Hoshangabad and Khandwa recorded 15 cases each. 14 cases were reported from Morena, 13 from Vidisha, 12 from Jabalpur, seven from Dewas, six from Gwalior, four each from Raisen, Shajapur and Chhindwara, three each from Sheopur and Dhar, two each from Satna, Shivpuri, Ratlam and Mandsaur and one each from Betul and Sagar.

On Tuesday, first COVID-19 positive case of Tikamgarh district was found, health officials said.

The affected man had worked at the hospital of the Indore doctor who died due to the COVID-19 last week, Tikamgarh''s Chief Health and Medical Officer Dr M.K. Prajapati said.

The total number of coronavirus cases in Odisha surged to 56, with another man testing positive on Tuesday (14 April), said the Health department.

The patient is a 66-year-old man from Jajpur district with travel history to Kolkata, informed district Collector Ranjan Kumar Das.

The number of active cases stood at 37 in the state as five more people recovered on Monday, taking the total number of patients cured of the disease to 18.

"It is indeed a pleasure to share that another five Covid patients, all of Bhubaneswar, have recovered and tested negative for COVID-19. With the combined efforts of all, Odisha is winning the fight against Covid!," tweeted the Health department.

The state has seen one casualty so far.

Municipal Administration Minister K T Rama Rao and Health Minister Eatala Rajender on Tuesday (14 April) reviewed the situation in the limits of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) at a meeting with officials.

Rama Rao, considered as number two in the government headed by his father K. Chandrashekhar Rao, and Rajender reviewed the situation with Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar, Director General of Police M Mahender Reddy, Principal Secretary, health, Shanti Kumari and other officials.

Out of the 472 COVID-19 patients undergoing treatment in the state, 216 are from GHMC. Out of 17 deaths in the state, GHMC accounts for 10 deaths.

Meanwhile, with 43 persons testing positive on Monday (13 April), the number of coronavirus cases in Madhya Pradesh climbed to 615 as the death toll touched 50, health officials said.

The death toll touched 50 with six more deaths reported in the past 24 hours. Indore confirmed three deaths while Bhopal and Khargone one each. The virus was confirmed in all the six patients after their death.

"So far we have reached the capacity of up to 1,050 tests per day and plan to raise it to 7,000 per day. We propose to rope in private medical colleges and other facilities in the state. Besides we have also sent 1,400 samples for testing to Delhi with a state plane to clear the backlog," Suleiman said.

Indore continued to lead with 328 cases as 22 were reported in the last 24 hours, health officials said. Three more cases were reported in Bhopal taking the tally in the state capital to 142. Morena recorded 14 cases, Jabalpur 10 , Ujjain 24, Hoshangabad 15, Khargone 17, Barwani 14, Raisen 4, Gwalior six, Khandwa five, Dewas four, Sheopur 3 AVidisha 13, Chhindwara 4, Satna, Dhar and Shivpuri two each and Betul, Shajapur, Sagar, Mandsaur and Ratlam one each so far.

Indore has accounted for 35 of the 50 deaths. Six persons have died in Ujjain, four in Bhopal, three in Khargone, one each in Chhindwara and Dewas. The virus has now spread to 23 out of 52 districts of the state.

So far 51 patients have recovered completely, officials said.

Total number of confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in India climbed to 8,356, with 909 fresh cases and 34 new deaths in the last 24 hours, according to the data published by the Union Health Ministry on Sunday (12 April).

While Maharashtra remained the worst hit state with a total number of positive cases rising to 1,761, Delhi reported the second highest number of cases, leaving behind Tamil Nadu for the first time.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said on Saturday that a total of 1,79,374 samples from 1,64,773 individuals have been tested in India as on April 11 9 p.m., and 7,703 of them have tested positive.

The West Bengal government has decided to impose complete lockdown in nine-ten areas of the state, identified as hotspots of the Covid-19 disease.

The identified areas will be sealed and nobody will be allowed to get in or come out of these places, chief secretary Rajeev Sinha said.

State secretariat sources said the inhabitants would be barred from leaving their homes unless for medical or emergency reasons and strict action taken under the disaster Management Act in case of violations.

All markets and shops including those selling essential items will be sealed, and the government will arrange for home delivery of all goods alongside the various online aggregators. The police and local administration will render all help to the inhabitants.

Sinha said so far, the Coronavirus infection has mainly been recorded from 9-10 areas in the state.

"We know people will be inconvenienced. But we are helpless. Nobody will be allowed to enter or exit the identified areas. The government will decide on the next course of action after reviewing the situation," he said.

Meanwhile, a city magistrate was injured on Saturday (11 April) when a team of district officials went to seal the Jali Kothi area in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut that was declared a coronavirus hotspot as per official guidelines.

A team comprising civil, health and police officials had gone to the area around 10 am when a mob pelted it with stones, injuring City Magistrate Sataendra Kumar Singh.

Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Kumar Sahni confirmed the incident.

A police department spokesperson said the four persons in the area were found coronavirus positive on Friday night, including three Tablighi Jamaat followers rounded up from the Dari Wali Masjid.

The district administration declared the area a coronavirus hotspot on Saturday morning, following which the team was dispatched to seal the area.

Additional police was rushed to the spot after the stone-pelting and many people detained.

District police spokesperson Pramod Gautam said the four persons found corona positive have been handed over to the health officials and quarantined.

He said, "Case should registered against those who are hiding the travel history or about infection. Action can be taken after the treatment. Apart from this, stern action should be taken against people misbehaving with those engaged in fight against COVID-19."

If the directive is followed earnestly, many of the state bureaucrats could be among the first to face the music. The three cities have been facing grave crisis of essential commodities with even daily supply of vegetables and grocery being snapped over the past three days.

Chief Secretary Iqbal Singh Bains said the test capacity has now reached 788 per day while by April 10 we will conduct 1,000 tests per day. There are seven labs to investigate and rapid testing kits are being arranged for quick screening of coronavirus.

The question about whether the ongoing nationwide lockdown will be extended or not has been at the top of people’s minds for a while now. And according to an Economic Times report, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi has dropped a hint about this.

Hotspots in 15 Uttar Pradesh district with a high viral load of Covid-19 will be sealed to prevent community spread of the disease, Chief Secretary R K Tiwari has announced.

The district in question whose areas would be sealed are - Agra, Lucknow, Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, Kanpur Nagar, Varanasi, Shamli, Meerut, Bareilly, Bulandshahr, Basti, Saharanpur, Maharajganj and Sitapur.

A 14 month old baby who was tested positive for Covid-19 died due to multiple organs failure at a hospital in Gujarat’s Jamnagar, Press Trust of India has reported.

The number of COVID-19 positive cases in Maharashtra shot up by 60 since Tuesday night, taking the total number of infectees from 1,018 to 1,078, as the number of death cases stood at 64, officials said on Wednesday (8 April).

The highest increase was noticed in Mumbai with 44 new cases, increasing the total tally from 642 to 686, besides 40 deaths.

Pune followed with nine new cases on Wednesday, raising its tally from 137 to 146 and eight deaths so far.

Nagpur recorded four new cases followed by Ahmednagar, Akola and Buldhana with one each.

Among the new cases till Tuesday, 23 infectees were those who attended the Tablighi Jamaat event in Delhi last month. They are: eight from Latur, six from Buldhana and four from Pune, two from Ahmednagar and one each in Hingoli, Jalgaon and Washim.

On Tuesday (7 April), Maharashtra recorded the highest single day new cases - 150 - with the death toll shooting to 64.

With the addition of 15 positive cases, the state's COVID-19 tally has reached 329.

Three of the fresh cases reported on Wednesday morning, are from Nellore district and another three cases have been reported from the Krishna district. Chittooru district has reported two cases.

Even as the COVID-19 tally is steadily inching upwards, the AP government has been intensifying measures to contain the spread of the infection.

At a review meeting on Tuesday, the state government decided to go for further surveys of the households.

The state's tally spiked following the return of hundreds of people from a Tablighi Jamaat congregation held between March 15-17 in Delhi.

The total number of people confirmed positive for the coronavirus in India has increased to 5,194 while 149 deaths were reported across the country, as per the latest data updated at 8 am today (8 April) by the Health Ministry.

According to the Health Ministry data, the confirmed cases of Covid-19 include 5,124 Indians and 70 foreign nationals.

Additionally, the total number of discharged/cured patients have risen to 401, while one patient has reportedly migrated to Singapore as per the latest data.

The total number of active cases across the country stands at 4,643.

Meanwhile, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has installed its newly developed full body disinfection chamber at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

The chamber will help in controlling the spread of coronavirus.

Last week, DRDO developed the full body disinfection chamber called as Personnel Sanitization Enclosure and face protection mask.

The Vehicle Research and Development Establishment in Ahmednagar, a DRDO Laboratory, had designed the full body disinfection chamber called as personnel sanitization enclosure.

"The walk through enclosure is designed for personnel decontamination, one person at a time. This is a portable system equipped with sanitizer and soap dispenser," the DRDO had stated.

The decontamination is started using a foot pedal at the entry. On entering the chamber, electrically operated pump creates a disinfectant mist of hyposodiumchloride.

The mist spray is calibrated for an operation of 25 seconds and stops automatically indicating completion of operation.

The positive Covid-19 cases in India have risen to 4,789 as per latest Health Ministry data updated till 6 PM on 7 April. 353 patients have recovered from the viral disease so far, while 124 have lost the battle.

Mumbai today (7 April) reported 100 new Covid-19 cases and five deaths as per data relased by BMC. This takes the total positive cases in the city to 590.

Rajasthan on Tuesday (7 April) reported 24 new novel coronavirus cases, taking the total such cases to 325 in the state, said Additional Chief Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh.

Jodhpur has nine new cases -- six are the family members of a patient found positive on Monday, a woman who is the wife of another patient reported infected the same day, and one patient in contact with a woman who tested coronavirus positive earlier. The 9th cases is of a woman surveyor from Udaimandir area, Singh said.

Jaisalmer(Pokhran) has registered seven cases -- all of them tested positive after contact with a corona patient.

One new case has been reported in Churu, said to be an attendee of Tablighi Jammat meet in Delhi.

Three new cases have been reported in Jaipur-Ramganj area, which includes an 8-year-old boy and two women, Singh said.

A 65-year-old corona positive patient, who had attended the Tablighi Jamaat meeting in Delhi last month, escaped from the hospital on Tuesday after breaking the glass pane and cutting the wire mesh on the window.

He used his clothes to form a rope and scale down the building.

Safid Miyan, a resident of Sursuri in Nepal, had been quarantined after he was found to be a member of the Jamaat. He had tested positive for the coronavirus on Friday and was undergoing treatment at the primary health centre in Khekhra.

Safid Miyan was a part of a group of 17 people from Nepal, who had attended the Delhi Tablighi Jamaat gathering.

The patient can infect a number of other people if he moves around untreated, the appeal said.

The police have launched a hunt for the runaway patient.

With 525 new patients, India today (4 April) witnessed its largest ever spike in positive coronavirus cases. The total positive Covid-19 cases in the country currently stand at 3,072 out of which 2,784 are active cases. The total fatalities recorded so far are 75, while 212 have recovered.

Tamil Nadu today reported 74 new cases out of which 73 attended the Tablighi Jamaat event. The total patients in the state are 411.

The total number of people confirmed positive for the coronavirus in India has increased to 2,902, as per the latest data updated at 9.00 am today (4 April) by the Health Ministry.

According to the Health Ministry data, the confirmed cases of Covid-19 include 1,945 Indians and 57 foreign nationals.

Further, the total number of discharged/cured patients has risen to 183, while one patient has reportedly migrated to Singapore as per the latest data.

The total number of deaths due to COVID-19 in India has risen to 68.

Meanwhile, three more members of the Tablighi Jamaat, who were at the congregation in Delhi's Nizamuddin Markaz in March, on Saturday (4 April) tested positive for coronavirus in Punjab, taking their total cases to five.

They were reported in Mansa district where they returned from Delhi on 19 March. Six people were tested negative, said Special Chief Secretary Karan Bir Singh Sidhu.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday (2 April) said seven of the state's 14 districts have been declared "hotspots" as they account for 226 of the total 256 coronavirus cases in the state.

"These are Kasargode, Kannur, Malappuram, Thrissur, Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kozhikode," said Vijayan.

Earlier, there were only two such districts - Kasargode and Pathanamthitta, which has now been excluded.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police Crime Branch conducted raids at several places in the national capital and surrounding areas till late Thursday in search of those who attended the Tablighi Jamaat event in Nizamuddin Markaz in Delhi last month as they are suspected to be infected with the dreaded coronavirus (COVID-19).

The police were also questioning several people whom they have taken into custody. According to sources, Maulana Saad Khandhlawi, the controversial head of Markaz Tablighi Jamaat, who is absconding since an FIR was registered against him, has been served a notice of inquiry.

Covid-19 positive cases crossed the 100-mark in Karnataka after 13 more tested positive in the last 24 hours, raising the state's tally 101, an official said on Tuesday (31 March).

"Till date, 101 Covid-19 positive cases have been confirmed. This includes three deaths and eight discharges," an official said.

The 43rd case was a 63-year-old man from Bengaluru who returned on 19 March after travelling to Brazil and Argentina while a 62-year-old woman from the city emerged as positive case number 101.

The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has identified and quarantined nearly 95 per cent persons who had attended the Tablighi Jamaat meet in Delhi in March.

"We have also been conducting raids in various districts where some of the foreign nationals have been hiding after the lockdown. We are examining their travel documents and those who have violated rules, are being booked under relevant sections," said a senior police official on Tuesday.

In Mathura, the local administration has quarantined 51 persons, including 30 who took part in the Tablighi Jamaat.

Health officials said that the 30 quarantined people hail from Shamli and Yamuna Nagar and had moved to the mosques in Mathura and Farah on 19 March.

Besides, 21 others, including 14 from Agra and 7 from Shamli, have also been home quarantined for 14 days even though they had not attended Delhi''s congregation but were in contact with the others.

Meanwhile, the Agra administration also quarantined 89 people, including 24 who had attended the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi's Nizamuddin. Others were from outside the state and were staying in mosques.

All of them were shifted to an institutional quarantine facility developed at a resort in Sikandra by Tuesday night.

Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain said on Tuesday (31 March) that 24 people have been found corona positive in the Nizamuddin markaz that has turned into ground zero of the new cases spiralling out of control following an ijtima in mid-March.

Giving details of the case reported in Nizamuddin, Jain said that the government is not certain of the number but it is estimated that 1,500-1,700 people had assembled at the Markaz building.

The Delhi Health Minister said that 1,033 people have been evacuated so far of which 334 have been sent to hospital and 700 have been sent to the quarantine centre. Jain said that 24 cases have been found to be positive for coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Bihar has sealed all its inter-state borders amid the 21-day nationwide lockdown due to coronavirus crisis.

The state''s border with Nepal too has been sealed, apart from that with Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Jharkhand.

"Many people had thronged the state''s borders. They have now been shifted to their native places and will have to remain in quarantine in schools and other places. Now on, no one can enter the state," state DGP Gupteshwar Pandey said.

Around 13,000 persons who had returned to the state from elsewhere have been sent to their native places after screening. The data on those who are expected to arrive is being prepared.

The total coronavirus cases in India have risen to 1,251 as per latest Health Ministry data updated at 9.30 PM on Monday (30 March). Out of these total cases 1117 are currently active and 101 have been cured. The death toll stands at 532.

The Centre on Sunday directed the states to strictly follow the nationwide lockdown norms and stop the movement of people across the cities, advising them to arrange shelter, food and other facilities for migrant labourers at their workplace.

Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi on Sunday (29 March) during his monthly radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat' appealed to people not to violate nationwide lockdown imposed to fight against COVID-19 pandemic and follow the norms.

He said, "I apologise for taking these harsh steps which have caused difficulties in your lives, especially the poor people. I know some of you would be angry with me also. But these tough measures were needed to win this battle."

With an addition of 16 new cases on Sunday (29 March), the total number of cases in India reached 1,045, as per the website India COVID-19 Tracker.

The number of COVID-19 positive cases rose to 193 in Maharashtra, besides six dead so far, on Sunday (29 March).

Besides Mumbai with the highest 77 cases, the other badly affected districts include Pune 37, Sangli 25, Nagpur 12, Kalyan-Dombivali seven, Navi Mumbai six, Thane five, Yavatmal and Vasai-Virar four each, Ahmednagar three, Satara and Raigad two each.

The first COVID-19 death has been reported from Kerala in Kochi, said a State Minister on Saturday (28 March).

State Agriculture Minister V S Sunilkumar told the media that the 69-year-old man arrived from UAE on March 22 and was in isolation.

"He is from Kochi and was suffering from heart ailment and blood pressure. Since he was already placed under high-risk category, this need not be a cause to worry. The body has now been handed over to his relatives and the funeral will take place later today. There is no need for any worries at all," said Sunilkumar.

"All those who came in contact with him have been identified and have been quarantined," added the State Minister.

Meanwhile, a team of researchers at IIT Kanpur is said to have developed a low cost invasive ventilator that can be mass produced using indigenous components, reports Times of India.

As per IIT Kanpur professors, due to local sourcing of components the ventilator will be made at a cost of Rs 70,000 while other variants of invasive ventilators are available at around Rs 4 lakh per unit in the market presently.

A prototype for the ventilator has been developed by “Nocca Robotics” - a startup incubated at the institute and run by four graduates Nikhil Kurele, Harshit Rathore, Tushar Agarwal and Abhishek Kulkarni.

There are at least 775 active Covid-19 cases in India at present, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Saturday (28 March), taking the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country to 873.

Besides 775 active cases, the country has reported 19 casualties so far while 78 persons have recovered.

The virus has so far spread to 27 states and UTs. A total of 103 districts have been affected by the highly contagious coronavirus.

“These vaccine candidates are small coronaviral peptides, molecules which are used by cells to trigger an immune response to destroy cells harboring these viral peptides,” the statement said.

The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in India has risen to 854, with as many as 120 cases, the highest in a single day so far, being reported from the states on Friday (27 March), reports Times of India.

The previous highest single-day count of cases was 99 on Monday (23 March).

As many as 39 fresh cases were reported from Kerala, with Kasargod district in the state reporting 34 new cases.

The kits were dispatched from the National Institute of virology and reached the virology lab housed in the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED) in Kolkata on Friday.

A NICED official said arrangements were being made to send the kits to various coronavirus testing laboratories in the state.

The Uttar Pradesh government has now launched the much-needed community kitchen to feed the poor and those stranded due to the lockdown.

According to the additional chief secretary (Home) Avanish Awasthi, "On day one, we prepared over one lakh food packets and distributed them among the needy in the state. Around 15 NGOs and other groups are helping the government while religious groups and other outfits have also offered to join the movement. In the first phase, Lucknow, Agra, Noida and Ghaziabad will have community kitchen."

Odisha is all set to open India’s largest hospital to treat Covid-19 patients within two weeks, ANI has reported.

The hospital will have a capacity of 1,000 beds and will be exclusively used to treat all those who have tested positive for coronavirus.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had yesterday (26 March) announced that all the health professionals in the state involved in combating the coronavirus pandemic will get advance salaries for four months in April.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman while addressing a press conference on Thursday (26 March) announced that the Ministry is ready with a Rs 1.7 lakh crore package for the immediate help of migrant workers and urban-rural poor.

She added that under the Pradhan Mantri Anna Yojana 5 Kg of rice or wheat will be provided to 80 crore Indians for free in the next three months over and above the allocation they already receive via the PDS system. The beneficiaries will also receive 1 Kg of pulses during this period.

Three persons, with a history of international travel, have tested positive for COVID-19 in Goa, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said early on Thursday (26 March). This is the first instance of positive coronavirus cases in the state.

"I have been informed by the state Directorate of Health Services (DHS) that three individuals have been tested positive for #COVID-19 in Goa. We are providing the best healthcare facility to the diagnosed patients," Sawant tweeted.

In a statement issued by the DHS, the three persons aged between 25 and 55 who have tested positive for COVID-19 had traveled back from Spain, Australia, and the US, and had been quarantined since their return earlier this month.`

Meanwhile, the total confirmed cases of coronavirus in India have increased to 629 on Thursday (26 March), reports Deccan Herald.

As many as 43 covid-19 patients have recovered, as per the latest data by the Ministry of Health Affairs.
