Court Upholds Two Years Imprisonment To AAP MLA Somnath Bharti For Assaulting AIIMS Staff In 2016

A Sessions court in Delhi upheld the conviction of two years imprisonment and sentencing order passed by a magistrate to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Somnath Bharti in connection with an assault case of AIIMS security guards.
Delhi court on Tuesday (23 March) sent Somnath Bharti to jail for two years after it upheld his conviction in the 2016 case, reports India Today.
Bharti was sentenced to two years of incarceration in a 2016 case in which he along with nearly 300 others also brought down the fence of a boundary wall at AIIMS along with a JCB operator. A fine of Rs one lakh has also been imposed on Bharti in the case by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Pandey.
The punishment was pronounced by the court under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 353 (assault or use of criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty) and 147 (rioting). Bharti has also been held accountable under section 3 (mischief causing damage to public property) of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.
Bharti, a former Delhi Minister and current MLA has been accused of harassment, cheating and criminal intimidation in a domestic violence case filed by his wife.
He has also been accused of running a spam website and was dubbed as one of the top three spammers in India.
He had recently courted controversy after he wished death on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Aditynath.
