Electoral Data: Here's All You Need To Know About The EC's Latest Annual Roll Revision Ahead Of Lok Sabha Polls

Ahead Of Lok Sabha Polls, the Election Commission Of India (EC) has announced the removal of more than 1.66 crore names from the electoral roll as part of its annual revision.
Additionally, the Election Commission also reported the addition of over 2.68 crore new voters, bringing the total number of eligible voters close to 97 crore for the general elections 2024.
The revision process covered the entire country except for six states: Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Mizoram, and Telangana.
As reported by Hindustan Times, these details were shared by the Election Commission in an affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court, which was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the Samvidhan Bachao Trust seeking effective measures to detect and remove duplicated names from the electoral roll.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud on Monday (5 February) had asked the EC to produce a break-up indicating dead voters, those permanently shifted and deletion on account of duplication.
In response to the court's query, the Election Commission provided a breakdown indicating deletions due to various reasons.
The affidavit stated, "During this period of Special summary revision (SSR) till date, a total of 2,68,86,109 new electors have been enrolled in the electoral roll and 1,66,61,413 existing entries have been deleted on account of dead, duplicate and permanently shifted voters."
Meanwhile, the court had scheduled further hearings on 12 February.
The commission also highlighted that there are approximately 96.82 crore electors in the electoral roll, with over 1.83 crore falling in the age group of 18-19 years.
It's important to note that the the annual special summary revision (SSR) is conducted once every year to publish the electoral roll as of 1 January of that year.
This year's SSR will conclude on 8 February.
