In a significant development, the Union government has officially announced revised wage rates for workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), effective from 1 April.
Despite the routine nature of the update, the Union Rural Development Ministry had to seek special permission from the Election Commission to issue the notification.
The new wage rates, notified by the Ministry of Rural Development, reflect adjustments based on changes in the Consumer Price Index- Agriculture Labor (CPI-AL), indicative of inflation in rural areas.
The rates are meticulously determined to ensure equitable compensation for MGNREGS workers across states.
While Goa witnesses the highest increase of 10.56 per cent, several other states, including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, also observe significant hikes exceeding 10 per cent, reported Indian Express.
In Karnataka, the new NREGS wage rate will be Rs 349 per day, 10.44 per cent higher than the existing rate of Rs 316 per day.
For Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the NREGS wage rates have been fixed at Rs 300 per day for 2024-2025, which is 10.29 per cent higher as compared to Rs 272 per day during the current financial year.
Uttar Pradesh experienced a modest increase of Rs 7, bringing the daily wage to Rs 237, while Goa a substantial hike of Rs 34, elevating the daily wage to Rs 356.
Meanwhile, Haryana emerged with the highest daily wage rate at Rs 374.
