News Brief
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu
Amid rumours of cross-voting in Rajya Sabha elections on Tuesday (27 February), the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led Congress government in Himachal Pradesh faces the danger of collapse.
In the elections held in November 2022, the Congress won 40 seats in the 68-seat Assembly, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 25 and Independents won three seats.
According to media reports nine to 10 Congress MLAs might have cross-voted for the BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan. This will not only lead to Congress candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi's defeat but also troubles for Sukhu.
Reports suggest that MLAs who cross-voted were not happy with Sukhu's leadership. Considering troubles in Himachal Pradesh, Sonia Gandhi's nomination from Rajya Sabha was moved to Rajasthan.
35 is the majority mark for the Himachal Pradesh Assembly. If the rumours of cross-voting turn out to be true, Sukhu's government can fall.
