In First-Of-Its-Kind Review Of PLI Scheme, Govt Aims To Address Issues Being Faced By Beneficiaries

To address the issues that the beneficiaries of the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme are facing, the government is reportedly set to hold a first-of-its-kind review and gather feedback.
The meeting will take place on 27 June and will be headed by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
Participants from all 14 ministries involved in implementing the scheme, which aims to make India a manufacturing powerhouse, will be in attendance, Business Standard reported citing people aware of the matter.
During the meeting, key beneficiaries of the scheme are expected to be present and a workshop will be conducted, according to one of the people.
"The idea is to have a detailed discussion on the scheme's implementation as well as seek feedback from industry and other gov- ernment departments," one of the person aware of the matter was quoted by Business Standard as saying.
This marks the first time such an event has been organised by the Commerce and Industry Minister, the person added.
The meeting in question is different from the meetings of the Cabinet secretary-headed empowered group of secretaries. The meeting has been scheduled in light of the several implementation challenges that PLI beneficiaries are currently encountering.
To illustrate, in the case of the PLI scheme for automobiles, companies are in a state of uncertainty regarding the incentives they are support to receive.
The Department of Heavy Industries is currently looking into the matter.
So far, 13 out of 14 PLI schemes have been put into operation, with the exception of steel, which has experienced substantial delays. According to the source quoted by Business Standard, the problems related to steel have been resolved and the plan will be put into action soon.
As per industry department data from April, there were claims worth Rs 3,420 crore under the PLI scheme in financial year 2022-23.
Beneficiaries in eight sectors, including mobile manufacturing, IT hardware, pharmaceutical drugs, bulk drugs, medical devices, telecom, food products, and drones, received Rs 2,874 crore from the government in FY23.
