India Has Showcased Itself As A Global Leader During The Past Year: US

In a comprehensive briefing to the US Congress, Lt Gen Jeffrey Kruse, Director of the US Defence Intelligence Agency, highlighted India's assertive steps towards global leadership and military modernisation aimed at competing with China and reducing reliance on Russian military equipment.
Speaking to the House Armed Services Committee's subcommittee on intelligence and special operations, Lt Gen Kruse pointed out India's prominent role on the global stage, notably during its hosting of the Group of 20 economic summit.
He emphasised India's increasing efforts to counteract the People's Republic of China (PRC) throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
“During the past year, India has showcased itself as a global leader by hosting the Group of 20 economic summit and demonstrated a greater willingness to counter PRC (People's Republic of China) activity throughout the Indo-Pacific region,” Lt Gen Kruse said, NDTV reported.
"India has not only modernized its military capabilities but has also fostered stronger partnerships with Indo-Pacific nations including the Philippines, the US, Australia, France, and Japan," he said.
He elaborated on India's significant milestones in 2023, such as conducting sea trials for its first domestically produced aircraft carrier and engaging in negotiations with Western countries for key defence technologies.
Looking forward, the intelligence official forecasted that in 2024, India will likely concentrate on securing its national parliamentary elections, sustaining economic growth, and advancing its 'Make in India' initiative.
According to him, these efforts are part of a broader strategy to bolster military modernisation against Beijing's influence.
The briefing also covered the ongoing tensions between India and China, stemming from the fatal Galwan clash in 2020.
Despite multiple rounds of talks, unresolved border disputes continue to strain bilateral relations, with both nations maintaining significant military presence along their shared border.
“India has maintained its neutral stance on Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Russia remains India's most substantial defence partner and New Delhi continues to acquire weapons from Moscow, such as the S-400 surface-to-air missile system, despite New Delhi's desire to diversify its defence acquisition partnerships,” Kruse said.
In addition to discussing India's strategic moves, Lt Gen Kruse touched upon Pakistan's defense dynamics, highlighting its nuclear modernization amidst economic challenges and increasing terrorist activities. He also noted the sustained, albeit uneasy, ceasefire with India along the Line of Control since early 2021.
