Discussions are underway between India and France to invite French President Emmanuel Macron to be the chief guest at the Republic Day parade in January 2024.

If Macron confirms, this will be the sixth time that a French President will be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations.

Discussions were held between India and the leaders of the Quad countries regarding the Republic Day celebrations, but these plans fell through due to the unavailability of US President Joe Biden.

The invitation extended by India to France is indicative of the strong relationship between the New Delhi and the Western European nation. The two countries have strategic partnership in defence, space, nuclear areas.

Earlier, PM Modi visited France to attend the Bastille Day Parade in July.

PM Modi participated in the Bastille Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour.

He had visited France at the invitation of French President Macron. PM Modi visited France to mark the 25th anniversary of the strategic partnership between India and France.
