To mark a positive start to the new year, India has emerged as the nation with highest Covid recoveries with the total number of recovered cases touching almost 1 crore. The number of people who have recovered from the pandemic in the last 24 hours stands at 19,557.

As per the latest report of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, almost 99.5 lakh people have recovered in the nation as of today amounting to a recovery rate of 96.19 per cent.

The number of new cases too are on a sustained decline with only 16,504 cases being added to the national tally in the last 24 hours bringing down the total case load to 2,43,953.

The share of active cases too stands low at 2.36 per cent of the cumulative caseload, while testing has been enhanced throughout the nation. More than 1.75 crore samples were tested in the last 24 hours at the 2,299 labs across the country.

The rise in the testing rate is also said to have brought down the cumulative positivity rate which currently stands at 5.89 per cent.

Among the states, Kerala, which has also sought preferential treatment in the case of vaccine distribution, has both the maximum new cases as well as recoveries.

While its single day recoveries stand at 4,688, its new cases too are highest in the country at 4,600 in the last 24 hours.

As reported by the Indian Express, the Kerala government has asked the Centre to accord it priority considering its situation. The state government, as reported, said its demand was justified on the basis of its epidemiological conditions as well as population density.

“Our strategy has been to delay the peak. Though we were the first state to report the disease, the cases in the state has peaked just now. Despite our population’s vulnerability and susceptibility, we have succeeded in our strategy. So in order to get the best out of our strategy, we need to get the vaccine first,” said Mohammad Asheel, executive director of Kerala Social Security Mission under the Social Justice Department, as quoted.
