Indian Investigative Agencies To Focus On Sharing Biometric Data Of Fugitive Criminals With US After Nudge From FBI Director

Following a recent dialogue with Christopher A Wray, the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), during his visit to India, all primary investigative bodies have initiated the collection of biometric data on the criminals on the run that they are investigating.

From 11 to 12 December, Wray visited India, marking the first time an FBI director has done so in 12 years. He met with officials from the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), intelligence agencies, and the Delhi Police during his stay.

Indian Express reported that, in his discussions with these investigative bodies, Wray stressed the necessity of exchanging biometric information of fugitive criminals, a departure from India's current practice of sharing details like current residence and locations.

At the conference, top representatives from the central investigative bodies highlighted issues regarding absconding criminals, seeking enhanced collaboration from American officials.

It was revealed post-discussion that Wray had requested the provision of biometric data for all implicated offenders. Sources indicate his emphasis on the significance of keeping this information on their server to simplify the capture process.

In accordance with these recommendations, central investigative bodies are currently assembling a biometric data collection of absconding lawbreakers. They are concentrating on their travel papers, encompassing both authentic and counterfeit passports.

Ordinarily, when India's central investigation agencies apply for a Red Corner Notice, they furnish details like the accused's name, passport data, and present location. However, in the wake of Wray's meeting, it was decided to collect biometric information from Aadhar and Passport records for fugitive criminals. This information will be compiled and disseminated to the appropriate agencies, together with their refreshed request.

Sources have noted that some criminals have absconded from India using counterfeit passports. Despite unearthing details of their new fraudulent passports, local investigative agencies often only provide basic information about their location.

During a meeting at the CBI headquarters, information emerged that Wray deliberated on accelerating the exchange of evidence and strengthening cooperation in the capture of criminals and fugitives to guarantee their confrontation with justice.
