Qatar has reportedly expelled an Indian journalist for covering the sentencing of eight former Indian Navy officers who were handed the death penalty, the Hindustan Times has reported.

The journalist and their spouse have returned to India in the wake of this incident, the report adds, without giving more details.

The sentences were imposed on the eight former naval officers after they were found guilty of spying on Qatar's submarine program for Israel.

In response, the Indian government has expressed its deep shock at the verdict and stated that they are exploring all legal options in this matter.

Qatar has not made any public statements regarding the convictions.

These sentences come at a time when Qatar's government is playing a crucial role in mediating negotiations between Israel and Palestinian terror outfit Hamas to secure the release of civilian hostages taken during Hamas' assault on Israel on 7 October.

It is worth noting that the last known execution in Qatar took place in 2020, according to the World Coalition Against The Death Penalty.

The Indian government's statement revealed that these Indian nationals had been detained in Qatar in August of the previous year.

The situation is developing, and further updates on this matter are awaited.
