Eleven men have been sent to jail for a week by an executive magistrate in Srinagar, as they were detained by J-K Police for not standing up for the national anthem during a police event attended by J&K Lt Governor Manoj Sinha on June 25.
Reportedly, the incident had caught the attention of J&K Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, who took strong action against the men involved.
Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, has stated that he would look into the matter, according to Indian Express.
On Thursday (July 6), the Srinagar Police clarified through a Twitter post that the news of 14 policemen/persons being arrested/suspended for disrespecting the national anthem is false. Instead, the 12 individuals have been bound down under sections 107/151 of CrPC for good behavior.
The men were brought before the Executive Magistrate (Tehsildar Khanyar, Srinagar) on July 3 and were subsequently sent to the Srinagar Central Jail for preventive custody.
The accused individuals were presented in person by the Nishat police station on July 3, 2023, in connection with a case registered under section 107/151 CrPC. The Executive Magistrate's order stated that there was a likelihood of them causing a breach of peace and disturbing public tranquillity if released.
As a result, they were directed to be detained in the Central Jail Srinagar for 7 days, and the proceedings of the case were to be conducted according to the law.
The order further directed the SHO of the Nishat police station to detain the accused individuals in the Central Jail Srinagar for a period of 7 days starting from the present day. The purpose of this detention was to carry out the proceedings of the case in accordance with the law.
The event on June 25, of the J-K Police, in collaboration with the Cycle Association, organized a cyclothon called 'Pedal for Peace'. The race saw the participation of approximately 2,250 cyclists. The Lieutenant Governor, Sinha, attended the award ceremony and congratulated the winners.
Police sources reported that during the singing of the national anthem in the presence of the L-G, there were individuals in the audience who did not stand up. Following this incident, the police were able to identify and detain some of the men involved.
These individuals are residents of the Valley and fall within the age group of 21 to 54.
