Law Commission Outlines Path To 'One Nation, One Election' For Kovind-Led Panel
High-Level Committee on 'One Nation, One Election' is chaired by former President of India, Ram Nath Kovind.
The Law Commission, in its recent recommendations, has proposed a roadmap for holding simultaneous elections in India, including proposed changes to the Constitution.
These suggestions were presented before a high-level committee chaired by former President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, as reported by The Hindu.
The panel, officially renamed the High-Level Committee (HLC) on 'One Nation, One Election' is tasked with examining the feasibility of holding Lok Sabha, Assembly, panchayat, and municipality elections together.
The Law Commission's final report is still pending, and it is expected to be invited again for further examination, as some aspects require additional review.
The commission is working on a formula to align all Assembly elections, potentially altering their tenures for simultaneous elections starting from the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
During the meeting, the Law Commission made a presentation elaborating on its recommendations regarding simultaneous elections in the country.
The HLC, in its first meeting, decided to solicit the views of political parties on the matter. To this end, letters have been sent to six national parties and 33 state parties, inviting their input on the 'One Nation, One Election' concept.
Furthermore, the committee approved a budgetary provision for itself for the ongoing financial year 2023-24.
