Larsen & Toubro (L&T) was awarded a contract by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to lay ballastless tracks for nearly a 36 km elevated stretch on Phase II corridor at Rs 340.6 crore.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday (13 September).
The expansion of Metro Phase II is planned with a network length of 118.9 km with 128 stations. It consists of three corridors, namely Corridor 3 —from Madhavaram to SIPCOT (45.8 km), Corridor 4 — from Lighthouse to Poonamalle Bypass (26.1 km), Corridor 5 — from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (47 km).
L&T's work would include the supply of head-hardened rails, turnouts, and fasteners and installing ballastless tracks in elevated sections, including 35 metro station locations, pocket tracks, and Phase II stabling lines, reports Economic Times.
The estimated cost of the Phase II metro is Rs 63,246 crore. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
According to CMRL, L&T will lay tracks and perform all associated work between CMBT and Sholinganallur on Corridor 5 and from Sholinganallur to SIPCOT on Corridor 3 of Phase II.
L&T has also been awarded a contract to build elevated viaduct and 10 stations for Chennai Metro Phase II.
The company is also working on five separate stretches of Phase II corridor construction.
L&T had earlier completed some packages in Chennai Metro Phase I.
The rapid growth of the vehicular population has laid severe stress on the urban transport system in Chennai, and thus rapid expansion of metro transit systems is envisaged.
