Mizoram Government Forms Committee To Resolve Long-Standing Border Issues With Assam

In a significant move to address the border disputes with Assam, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) government in Mizoram has established a ‘Boundary Committee’ headed by Home Minister Sapdanga, reported Indian Express.
The committee, constituted on 3 January, is tasked with examining and finding solutions to the vexed Assam-Mizoram boundary issues that have led to tensions between the two states.
The committee also comprises key members, including the Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change, the state Home Department Commissioner, the advisor to the Chief Minister, the Chief Secretary, the state DGP, and representatives from recognized political parties in Mizoram.
Earlier, the long-standing border dispute between Mizoram and Assam, spanning 165 km across three districts on either side had escalated into violence in 2021, resulting in several casualties.
Subsequently, the clashes prompted the need for a comprehensive approach to resolving the disputes.
The newly formed Boundary Committee is expected to play a crucial role in facilitating dialogue and finding amicable solutions.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma is anticipated to engage in discussions with his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma during the North Eastern Council (NEC) plenary session scheduled for 19 January in Shillong.
The historical origins of the border dispute stems from colonial demarcations in 1875 and 1933, creating ambiguity in territorial claims.
