Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the rooftop solarisation of 1 crore houses on Thursday (1 February) in her Budget speech. Through rooftop solarisation, 1 crore houses will be enabled to get 300 units of electricity free per month.

"This scheme follows the resolve of the Prime Minister on the historic day of the consecration of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya," she said highlighting that households will be able to save Rs 15,000-18,000 annually and the surplus can be sold to distribution companies.

"Charging of electric vehicles, entrepreneurship opportunities for a large number of vendors for supply and installation, employment opportunities for youth with technical skills in manufacturing, installation and maintenance" are other benefits.

The Narendra Modi government's plan to provide free electricity contradicts of that of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal, whose free electricity promises are known to have burdened the state exchequer.

Also, the scheme uses green energy for electricity from a renewable source like the sun.
