Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been invited by the pro-vice-chancellor of the University of Oxford, Jonathan Michie, to deliver a keynote speech at the prestigious university in June next year.

As reported by The Times Of India, The announcement was made during the Bengal Global Business Summit on Tuesday (21 November), where Amit Mitra, the principal chief adviser to the Chief Minister, facilitated the revelation.

Jonathan Michie expressed the university's admiration for Banerjee's life journey and her impactful views and policies on anti-racism and communal harmony. 

He highlighted the significance of Banerjee's reflections on life, citing her struggles and achievements as compelling narratives that resonate globally.

The invitation was extended after an introduction by industrialist Rudra Chatterjee, an Oxford University alumnus and MD of Luxmi group.

Michie, who is an economist and the president of Kellogg College at Oxford, conveyed that the proposal was met with enthusiasm by Banerjee, who acknowledged and accepted the invitation.

Chief Minister Banerjee, in her address preceding the announcement, shared insights into her childhood struggles, emphasising the challenges she faced in education after her father's untimely demise.

Despite linguistic challenges, Banerjee conveyed her message, stating, "I can't speak very good English like many of you. But I know a number of languages in bits."
