BEML Successfully Test Fires First Indigenous 1500 Horsepower Engine For Main Battle Tanks
India successfully conducted the maiden test-firing of its first indigenously-made 1500 Horsepower (HP) engine for Main Battle Tanks on Wednesday (20 March).
The test was presided over by Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane and conducted at BEML’s Engine division in the Mysuru complex.
The success of the 1500 HP engine is being called a paradigm shift in military propulsion systems as it possesses a high power-to-weight ratio and operability in extreme conditions.
The engine can work at high altitudes, sub-zero temperatures, and desert environments. It is equipped with advanced technologies and stands on par with the most advanced engines globally.
The Defence Secretary described the achievement as a transformative moment that will enhance the capabilities of the Armed Forces.
The first test-firing of the 1500 HP engine signifies the completion of Generation One, focusing on technology stabilisation. In Generation Two, the BEML will produce engines for various trials at a DRDO laboratory.
The project is slated for completion by mid-2025. It began in August 2020 and has been meticulously structured into five major milestones, ensuring timely completion and adherence to quality standards.
