Punjab's New Battle: Pharma Pills Rise As Silent Adversaries In The War Against Addiction

Punjab is facing a worrying increase in the misuse of pharmaceutical drugs, locally known as "nasheeli goliyaan."
These pills, readily available and affordable, have become the drug of choice for many struggling with addiction, signaling a shift in the drug abuse scenario in the region.
As per reports by Indian Express, Recent data from the Punjab Police reveals that nearly 25 per cent of FIRs filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act from April 2022 to February 2023 are linked to the seizure of these pharmaceutical pills.
This trend is particularly noticeable away from the International Border, where heroin has traditionally been more common.
The Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, expressed concern about the growing misuse of pharma drugs, especially in areas like Kapurthala, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Ludhiana, Mansa, and Bathinda.
The addiction to these drugs extends beyond state borders, as seen in the dismantling of an inter-state pharmaceutical drug cartel by the Fatehgarh Sahib Police in July.
The pills being misused include pain-relievers and anti-depressants like Tramadol, Alzepam, Buprenorphine, and even anti-diarrhea medicines like Lomotil.
A recent focus has been on 'Signature' capsules, originally used for diabetic neuropathy.
To address this issue, some district administrations have imposed restrictions on the sale of these tablets.
However, individuals continue to find ways to obtain them from neighboring states with lax regulations.
Despite stringent enforcement, the problem extends beyond regional borders, requiring a comprehensive and coordinated approach to tackle the complex issue of pharmaceutical drug misuse in Punjab.
