Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly decided to run in the March 2023 presidential election, a move that could keep him in power until at least 2030, according to a report by Hindustan Times.

This decision comes as Russia faces a tumultuous period, particularly due to the ongoing Ukraine invasion.

Putin, who turned 71 on 7 October, has already served as Russia's president for a longer duration than any other Russian leader since Josef Stalin.

Despite the challenges Russia is currently facing, opinion polls indicate that Putin maintains approval ratings of 80 per cent within the country.

The sources who shared this information stated that advisors are now preparing for Putin's campaign, and a carefully crafted plan regarding his decision is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

One source emphasised the dangerous global context that Russia currently navigates, while a foreign diplomatic source mentioned that Putin had recently made the decision, with an official announcement expected soon.

However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov clarified that no official announcement or campaign statement had been made by the President.

Earlier, Peskov had suggested that if Putin decided to run, he would be an unbeatable candidate. The Kremlin also dismissed rumours of Putin's ill health as disinformation propagated by the West.

Putin, a former KGB spy, faces a set of challenges unparalleled in recent Russian history.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has triggered a significant confrontation with the West, making this a critical and perilous period for the country.
