The interlocking system

RailTel has completed electronic interlocking at all three assigned stations of Delhi Division to enhance speed and safety.

Besides speed, the modern electronic interlocking system will also facilitate maximum speed of 100 kmph from the earlier 50 kmph, with mechanical signalling systems.

RailTel Enterprises Ltd (REL), a wholly owned subsidiary of RailTel, has successfully commissioned electronic interlocking signalling systems at Kalayat and Kaithal station of Northern Railway.

With this, the old mechanical signalling system at these two stations has been replaced by state-of-the-art modern signalling. Electronic interlocking had earlier been commissioned at Pehowa Road Station.

Earlier these stations were having mechanical signalling systems and were using lever frames for signal interlocking.

The new electronic interlocking signalling system will now enable lowering the signal and changing of tracks by click of a mouse. The changing of the mechanical interlocking system with modern electronics interlocking system will enhance the safety and operational efficiency. Earlier mechanical interlocking system featured standard 1 interlocking which facilitated a maximum speed of 50 kmph.

Now, with modern electronic interlocking system will have with a maximum speed of 100 kmph.

Thus, modern electronic system is not only enhancing the safety and efficiency of train traffic but also increasing the speed.

The clearance of block section — assurance of complete arrival of train — is being provided with the latest system of digital axle counters. Operation of five level crossing gates has also been changed from mechanical to electrical type, which further increases efficiency of level crossing closing and opening.

The train handling capacity of the yard has been increased by allowing simultaneous reception and dispatch of the trains.

The length of berthing lines — CSR — has been increased, and hence full goods train can be berthed, which will increase holding capacity of berthing tracks.

To improve the railway signalling system, Northern Railway has entrusted RailTel to upgrade the manual signalling system of 26 stations.

REL Chairman Puneet Chawla said, “These three stations have been provided with signalling gears like signals, track circuit, point machine, batteries, earthing surge protection devices etc as per latest technology to standard 2R interlocking system making train operation safer, faster and more efficient. RailTel is fully geared to complete the project for modernizing the signalling system at the remaining 23 stations.”

RailTel is one of the largest neutral telecom services providers in the country owning a Pan-India optic fiber network covering all important towns and cities of the country and several rural areas.

Keeping in view the expanding activities in project execution works for telecom and signalling, RailTel incorporated REL in August 2014, aiming to be one of the leading system integrator in the country working in the field of ICT.

REL is focused on taking up turnkey project work for creation, management and operation in the areas of IT, telecom, networking, data center and Railway’s ICT projects. With a dedicated focus and organisation suited to executing projects in the areas of expertise, REL is poised to become a key driver of growth and innovation for RailTel as well.

RailTel is also working with the Indian Railways to transform railway stations into digital hubs by providing public wi-fi at railway stations across the country and a total over 6,040 stations are live with RailTel’s RailWire Wi-Fi.
