The Ministry of Defence has requested the Karnataka Government to consider conducting a joint survey to hand over 2.37 acre defence land in Iblur village in Bengaluru Outer Ring Road for construction of the proposed metro rail project, Deccan Herald reported.

While Defence ministry has expressed willingness to hand over the land to the state government for various ongoing infrastructure projects including metro rail, it asked for a joint survey with Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation ( BMRCL) to identify and arrive at mutual agreement.

BMRCL is planning to acquire additional defence land to facilitate the construction of an integrated metro station at Iblur.

Iblur metro station will serve the under construction ORR-Airport metro line and the proposed Sarjapur to Hebbal metro.

Bengaluru is dotted with several cantonment areas. The defence complex in Iblur includes an army camp covering 520.7 acres while the firing range owned by theArmy Service Corps covers 445.26 acres.

As part of the ongoing ORR-Airport metro project, the metro station will come on the median of the road. Considering the future plan for the Sarjapur to Hebbal metro, the BMRCL engineering section has recommended the acquisition of over two acres of land for integration.

During his recent budget speech, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced a 37-km metro line between Sarjapur and Hebbal via Agara, Koramangala, and Dairy Circle to be developed at the cost of ₹15,000 crores.

The work on constructing a 58.19 km long ORR-Airport metro line connecting Central Silk Board with Kempegowda International Airport is fully underway, and set to be completed by Mar 2025.
