Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has reportedly said that socialists of today do not reflect on the ideals of great leaders like Ram Manohar Lohia. He added that had the socialists kept Lohia's ideals in mind, they would have been able to rise above casteism and nepotism and would have been able to serve people.

Adityanath was reportedly talking to a media publication during an interview, where he said that he has repeatedly quoted Lohia, and that once upon a time people such as Lohia were leading the opposition.

Adityanath reportedly added that the current opposition lacks leaders and personalities such as Lohia.

Adityanath was reportedly asked during this particular interview what Vidur (of Mahabharata) would have told him (Adityanath) if he were present today. To this, Adityanath reportedly replied that Vidur would have told him (Adityanath) that he is serving the people well. He added that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) must serve the people of Uttar Pradesh for 25 more years for the well being of the state and its people.

In a reply to another question, he added that Vidur, if present today, would ask Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to sit down and relax.

Adityanath was reportedly asked in the interview who he is competing with -- Bahujan Samajwadi Party supremo Mayawati or Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav -- in Uttar Pradesh. To this he said that he does not consider anyone his rival. He added that the opposition is part of the democratic system.

The BJP central leadership has indicated that Adityanath will lead the party's campaign in Uttar Pradesh Assembly election in 2022.
