Sweepers, Garbage Collectors Assured Regularisation Of Service By Karnataka Government

Streets of Bengaluru that had been lined with unpicked litter for the last few days finally will be clean again from today as the state government has assured the regularisation of the jobs of pourakarmikas.
“A long pending demand of pourakarmikas in Bengaluru for regularisation of their services will be finally fulfilled and it is a historic and first of its kind effort in the country“, said CM Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday (5 July).
Addressing the media outside his RT Nagar residence, Bommai said they have been working under pathetic conditions and keeping this in mind, a distress allowance of Rs 2,000 had been made in the budget.
“But somewhere they have been nursing the thought that regularisation of services will ease their life and improve their living conditions and hence I have ordered for the same. They have also expressed their happiness and assured complete support for the implementation of this decision," Bommai said.
The Chief Minister also said a committee of law officers, president of the corporation and labour leaders would be formed to discuss and finalise the special recruitment of pourakarmikas and assured that all the demands that had been placed for certain benefits will be met.
Earlier this week, the state government has also assured to extend social security, assistance for the education of their children and medical services to pourakarmikas, as reported.
The pourakarmikas had gone on strike from Friday (1 July 2022) demanding the regularisation of jobs and threatened to not pick garbage from homes until their demands were met. An agitation had been launched at Freedom Park in Bengaluru.
“For the last four days, all our pourakarmikas, especially women, have braved the rains and heat and have undertaken this protest, which ended today. For several years, it was a dream to get permanency as everyone knew the problems there were in the contract system,” said President of Pourakarmika Sangha Nirmala, as quoted by the Hindustan Times.
