Calcutta High Court.
The Calcutta High Court on Thursday (22 February) granted bail to a television journalist arrested by the West Bengal police in the violence-hit Sandeshkhali area.
The court also ordered a stay on further proceedings in the case registered against Santu Pan, a journalist working with the Republic Bangla, at Sandeshkhali police station.
The bail was granted to Pan by Calcutta HC Justice Kausik Chanda on petition moved by the Republic TV journalist.
Pan was arrested on late Monday (19 February) evening and was remanded to police custody for three days by a local court in North 24 Parganas district on Tuesday (20 February).
Pan was reportedly arrested on the basis of a complaint by a woman alleging that he had trespassed into her house.
He was charged under the Indian Penal Code’s (IPC) sections 447 (criminal trespass), 448 (house trespass), 354 (outraging modesty of a woman), 354C (any man who watches or captures a woman engaging in a private act), 509 (insulting modesty of a woman), 506 (criminal intimidation).
