A special team from the Nagapattinam Police seized 300 kg of ganja bound for Sri Lanka and arrested six persons who are suspected to be part of an international gang.

Superintendent of Police Harsh Singh said that the police received a tip-off regarding the smuggling activities taking place in the Nagapattinam district.

The information indicated that a substantial amount of ganja was being transported from the border areas of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. The ultimate destination for these drugs was Sri Lanka, and Nagapattinam was being used as a transit point.

Acting on the tip off, the special team conducted a surprise vehicle check near the Kuravappulam Railway level crossing, late on Sunday (30 July). During this operation, they intercepted a four-wheeler and found it to be carrying 12 bags containing over 300 kg of ganja.

A case has been filed against the under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. The accused have been arrested and are currently in judicial custody. The police are conducting further investigations into the matter.

A major breakthrough with regards to drugs being smuggled to Sri Lanka from Tamil Nadu had occurred last November, when the Naval police seized cocaine worth Rs 360 crore from a luxury car near Rameswaram.

The two occupants of the car were an incumbent Keezhakarai Municipality Councillor, Sarbraz Nawaz and his brother Jainuddin, a former councillor. Both of them belonged to the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
