Balamuragan, a resident of Ponneri, succumbed to injuries after he was brutally beaten by the aides of local Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) councillor Elango due to a property dispute.
The dispute started between two women Nandhini and Gayathri. Gayathri used to stay on rent in her aunt Nandhini's house. The house is Nandhini's ancestral property.
A few days back, Nandhini had sent Gayathri out of the house due to a dispute and kept the keys with herself. During the argument that followed, a local DMK councillor Elango and his aides came and beat up Gayathri and her sister Keerthi.
The councillor is believed to be a relative of Nandhini.
After this Gayathri filed a police complaint along with the CCTV footage with the assistance of her relative Balamurugan and a friend Robert.
Later they assaulted both of them with stones. While Robert managed to escape, Balamurugan was beaten severely and he later succumbed to his injuries.
The police have so far arrested two aides of the councillor involved in the incident.
Condemning the incident Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Annamalai said that the people of the state are now asking if DMK councillors have made Kattapanchayat (kangaroo courts) as their full time occupation.
He added that had the police immediately taken action against the councillor, the death could have been prevented.
In February, an Army soldier Prabhu died due to a brutal attack by DMK councillor Chinnaswamy and his aides.
