Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) general secretary Duraimurugan today wrote a letter to the Law Commission opposing the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

The party said that the UCC would affect the rights provided to citizens under Article 25 (Freedom of conscience and free profession, practice and propagation of religion) and Article 29 (Protection of interests of minorities).

Further, it said that by going against the secular ethos of the country, the UCC would affect peace and tranquillity in the state.

Regarding social evils like polygamy, the DMK suggested that suitable amendments be made to the existing personal laws instead of abolishing personal laws.

The DMK's letter comes days after the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) also opposed the UCC.
