The National Investigation Agency (NIA) raided 21 locations across the state on 23 July in connection with the murder of Ramalingam, a Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) functionary in February 2019 by members of the now banned Popular Front of India (PFI).
He was brutally attacked by a gang of armed men who intercepted his car. He later succumed to his injuries.
According to PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss, he was killed for opposing religious conversions at a village in Thanjavur district.
The NIA has announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for information leading to the arrest of any one of the accused, who remain at large.
In August 2019, it filed a chargesheet against 18 people, of which a majority have been arrested.
