After the district panchayat, the proposal to change the name of Firozabad to Chandranagar has now been approved by the municipal corporation as well.

In the 12-member executive committee meeting held on Thursday (30 November), 11 members accepted the proposal. Additionally, 15 other proposals were also passed. The executive committee meeting was held under the chairmanship of Mayor Kamini Rathore.

A total of 17 proposals were presented in the meeting. The tax officer Neeraj Patel proposed changing the name of Firozabad to Chandranagar, which was passed without any debate.

From Ward Number 61, Samajwadi Party (SP) councillor Mohammad Rihaan suggested presenting evidence that Firozabad was formerly called Chandranagar. He said that if there is no evidence, it should be left as Firozabad.

Earlier, in the first board meeting of the district panchayat held on 12 July 2021, the demand for changing the name of Firozabad to Chandranagar was raised in the presence of State Tourism and Culture Minister Thakur Jayveer Singh. The district panchayat had passed the proposal to change Firozabad's name to Chandranagar unanimously.

Since then, the demand is rising as it is believed that Firozabad's original name was Chandranagar, established by King Chandrasen. Chandrawad is still a gram panchayat in Firozabad on the banks of the Yamuna, where the ruins of King Chandrasen's fort are present.

The government recently declared this fort and the surrounding area as a protected monument. In 1566, Mansabdar Firoz Shah, sent by Akbar, changed its name to Firozabad, Jagran reported.
