A team from the Income Tax Department, in collaboration with the Central Public Works Department (CPWD), visited Jauhar University following the imprisonment of Samajwadi Party (SP) senior leader Azam Khan, his wife Tazeen Fatma, and son Abdullah Azam.

Khan was vice chancellor of Mohammad Ali Jauhar University since 2012 and served as cabinet minister in the Akhilesh Yadav government from 2012 to 2017, during which these fund transfers took place.

The purpose of this joint action on Friday (20 October) was to conduct a precise evaluation of the university's buildings, Amar Ujala reported. The team meticulously examined every aspect of the university premises and thoroughly reviewed all the documents.

This evaluation is taking place after it was revealed that a sum of Rs 106 crore from the Uttar Pradesh government was illegally transferred to Jauhar University.

It is believed that the assessed value of the university's buildings may significantly exceed the reported costs. This combined effort is aimed at scrutinising the documentation and identifying any discrepancies between the recorded expenses and the actual expenditure.

This investigation follows the recent searches conducted by the Income Tax Department at Jauhar University and at the residences of individuals closely associated with Azam Khan.

The tax department's team spent an extended period in Rampur, examining various properties and questioning numerous individuals.

The three were sentenced to seven years of jail on Wednesday (18 October) in a fake birth certificate case of Abdullah Azam Khan.
