Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has reportedly accused Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath of "rigging the elections" for district panchayat chairpersons in the state. Yadav has reportedly said that Adityanath's "undemocratic behaviour poses a threat" to constitutional institutions.

He has reportedly accused CM Yogi of "hijacking the mandate" in the zila panchayat polls. He has added that the state administration "forcibly prevented candidates of Samajwadi Party and other opposition parties from filing nominations."

NDTV website has quoted Yadav as saying: "The CM has crossed all limits in rigging the district panchayat chairperson elections. His undemocratic conduct has posed a threat to the constitutional institutions in the state."

Yadav has said that the BJP may use its power currently to dominate the zila panchayat polls but the Samajwadi Party will win 350 seats in the upcoming Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh. He has said that the BJP will be compelled to sit in the opposition in 2022.

Yadav further accused officers in the state, the Election Commission and the powers that be at the Rajbhawan, for being "mute spectators".

Yadav has alleged that the BJP snatched the nomination papers of the Samajwadi Party candidate in Balrampur after keeping him on house arrest and that in Lalitpur, the BJP workers prevented the Samajwadi candidate from filing his nomination papers.

He alleged that in Gorakhpur, BJP workers "laid siege" to the main gate of the district collectorate, guarding "every point in the building leading to the nomination room".
