Himanta Biswa Sarma Vows To Eradicate Child Marriage From Assam By 2026

Himanta Biswa Sarma pledged to “completely eradicate child marriage from Assam by 2026."

The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has made a commitment to eliminate child marriage from the state by 2026.

He also announced plans for administrative reforms in the constituencies affected by the recent delimitation process in Assam.

During his Independence Day address in Guwahati, Sarma revealed that the Assam government will conduct a second crackdown on child marriage in September.

Earlier this year, the government launched a state-wide crackdown on child marriage, resulting in the arrest of over 3,000 individuals and the registration of more than 4,300 cases within a month.

The Chief Minister reiterated his stance on Tuesday (15 August) that the Assam government is actively working towards the complete withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the state by the end of the year.

Currently, there are eight districts that fall under the jurisdiction of 'disturbed areas' under AFSPA. The Centre had last year lifted the notification of "disturbed areas" under AFSPA from the entire state, with the exception of nine districts and one sub-division of another district.
