The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala has booked 1000 members of the Thiruvananthapuram Taluk Union of the Nair Service Society (NSS) for holding protests against Speaker AN Shamseer's remarks about Lord Ganesha.

The case has been filed on the grounds of unlawful assembly.

NSS vice-president M Sangeetkumar has said that the organisation would fight the case legally.

A procession was conducted yesterday (2 August) evening from the Palayam Ganapati temple to Pazhavangadi Ganapati temple. Thousands of people participated in it.

The NSS had decided to observe 2 August as 'Faith Protection Day' and had asked its members to visit Ganesha temples and give their offerings.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Surendran said that the government's move to lodge cases against NSS members for a peaceful protest was undemocratic. He also urged all believers to take this as a wake up call and stand strong against oppression.

Shamseer has refused to apologise for his remarks. His party, the CPI(M) has also stood by him.
