The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted searches at multiple locations in Delhi's Shaheen Bagh today, (11 May) in relation to the Kozhikode train arson case.

The accused Shahrukh Saifi had thrown an inflammable liquid at passengers of the Alappuzha-Kannur Express. While nine people had sustained burn injuries, three bodies were discovered on the railway tracks. It is believed that they had jumped off the train in order to save themselves.

Saifi had claimed that he had acted on his own but the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Kerala police found that many of his contacts were under the radar of Anti-Terror squads (ATS) of various states.

It invoked the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) against him as it believed that he most likely had handlers and local support.

The case was later transferred to the NIA.

Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) MR Ajithkumar, who headed the SIT had said that Saifi is highly radicalised and influenced by Zakir Naik.
