The controversy created by Swami Prasad Maurya after his remarks on the Ramcharitmanas and after some of his supporters burnt a copy of the text, has now created division in the Samajwadi Party itself. Fellow Samajwadi Party legislator Rakesh Pratap Singh lashed out at Maurya on Saturday (11 February).

Speaking at a religious event in Gauriganj, Amethi, Singh described Maurya as ‘deranged’. “It is extremely unfortunate that he is a leader of my party,” he said.

He went on to add that he will oppose Maurya even if it costs him his political career or the party ticket in the next elections. He assured he will discuss the issue with the party leadership.

“One who makes unpardonable remarks on Lord Ram also cannot be a Samajwadi. Only a mentally unstable person can make such remarks,” he said.

Earlier SP’s chief whip in the State Legislative Assembly Manoj Pandey too voiced his reservations over Maurya’s doings. “Ramcharitmanas is a ‘granth’, which is followed by people across the world. It teaches us moral values and the importance of relations,” he commented.

Former SP MLA and party spokesperson Roli Tiwari Mishra has also been attacking Maurya ever since the comments were made a few weeks ago. “I will always support Sanatan Dharma over party politics,” she said and urged the state government to impose the stringent National Security Act on Maurya.

Meanwhile, Maurya has created another controversy by attacking the Bageshwar Dham priest and alleging that saints are now speaking the language of terrorists.
